Two day National Seminar on ‘Conflict in South and West Asia at AMU

ALIGARH, December 21: Inaugurating a two day National Seminar on ‘Conflict in South and West Asia was organized by the Centre of West Asian Studies, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Former Indian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Prof. Veena Seekri emphasized the role of people to people contact as a way for resolving conflicts. She was of the opinion that in today’s globalised world, people to people diplomacy is playing an important role in international relations. In the new media and communication regime, this form of diplomacy challenges general understanding and practice of foreign policy issues. In this scenario, the concept of “people to people contact” can create new opportunities and avenues. Giving various examples from Bangladesh where she served as High Commissioner she further emphasized that track two diplomacy deals with the influence of public attitudes on the formation and execution of foreign policies.

The AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis in his residential remarks discussed the issues of conflict resolution with reference to West Asian region. To him the Arab – Israel conflict is the result of the failure of the on the part of the western powers to understand the issues in right perspective. He very categorically stated that the emergence of Israel as an independent nation in 1948 has not been accepted by the Arab World which views it as an American imposition. The conflict in Iraq has further compounded the ever growing conflicts & tensions in the region. He also spoke about Indian foreign policy posture over Palestine issue and emphasized that the problem can only be resolved taking into consideration the various factor ranging from sociological root of conflict; conflict caused by the “state system”, and regional case studies.

Prof. Girjesh Pant, Vice Chancellor, Doon University, Dehradun, in his key note address discussed at length about the dimensions of the Palestinian – Israeli battle, the two gulf war (Iraq-Iran and the Kuwait war), Lebanon, the Kurds and the rise of political Islam in the context of governance and state building in the West Asia. He shows his concern that as an academician all these occurrences demand explanations, historical records and often compelling perspectives in terms of explaining why collapse into violence has occurred in such contexts. He was however, optimistic that despite repeated setbacks and failures, and despite negative trends the course of peace-making in the two regions has also seen several breakthroughs in avoiding wars and-resolving some of their conflicts.

Dr. Javed Iqbal, Convener of the Seminar in his address emphasized that the purpose for organizing this conference is to understand the dynamics of the issues involved the conflict in terms of issues of terrorism, ethnic and religious discord; the surge of extremist religious elements; and the encouragement of local conflicts by the regimes in power. The purpose is to address to the causes in terms of explaining why collapse into violence has occurred in such contexts Given these facts, the task of peace-making in the West and South Asia has had repeated setbacks and failures. He wished that the discussions in the seminar would go a long way towards meeting such a need.

While welcoming the guests and fellow participants those included diplomats, policy makers and scholars from academia , Prof. Mohammad Gulrez , Chairman -Organizing Committee emphasized that from the decolonization to the present day these two regions have witnessed the outbreak of wars; foreign involvement; successful and aborted peace processes; the adoption of military and non-military confidence-building measures (CBMs); terrorism, ethnic and religious discord; the surge of extremist religious elements; and the encouragement of local conflicts by the regimes in power.

He further emphasized that in this kind of conflict the human costs are high and are borne  principally by the civilian population- civilians make more than 90 percent of the causalities in the post cold war conflicts globally. There are also the political costs of the demolition of the democratic system and even the disintegration of states. Efforts to create a lasting peace have a deal with all these kinds of problems.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. CPS Chauhan, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, the seminar was attended by large number of faculty members, students and invited participants.

K.P. Singh Memorial Lecture

ALIGARH November 16: Notwithstanding the constitutional provisions of equality, the Indian state has not done enough to dispel insecurity from the minds of minorities as the most important symbol of the state – police – hardly enjoy the confidence of the Muslims, Christians and Sikhs, regretted Mr. Vibhuti Narain Rai, eminent writer and Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International University, Wardha today.

Delivering first K. P. Singh memorial lecture on “State Response to Communalism”, Mr. Vibhuti Narain Rai, IPS, said that the minorities never consider the police as friend or protector. The police is seen as the oppressor and the police behavior in communal riots bear testimony to the fact. Quoting his well-documented research on the role of police in combating communalism, Mr. V. N. Rai said that the Muslims always suffered heavy loss in terms of lives and properties at the initial stages and subsequently they were killed in police firing and police also arrested more Muslims.

Debunking the myth that the Muslims start riots, Mr. Rai said he sifted through the police records and found that even the first hour of the riots, more Muslims were killed. It proves that it is wrong to say that the Muslims start riot and the police control the situation. He said if the state is firm, no riot could continue more than 24 hours. During the communal strife, police become perpetrator of violence and the state lack the will to curb it.

Tracing the history of communal riots, Mr. Rai said that the assassination of Gandhi put a full stop to riot and no major riot took place till 1961. After that riots occurred in regular intervals of two or three years. The police always behaved in partisan manner and it resulted lack of faith in police that also denotes lack of faith in the state which is very alarming. This calls for serious introspection, he said.

Paying glaring tributes to Professor K. P. Singh, Mr. Rai said that he was an avowed enemy of narrowmindness and communalism.

Recalling K. P. Singh’s contribution to literature, noted Urdu poet Shahryar said that Prof. Singh wanted literature to reflect social consciousness. He also recited a poem in memory of Prof. K. P. Singh.

Delivering the presidential address, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University said that Indian democracy has become more matured and now there is a considerable decrease in communal riots. He paid rich tributes to Prof. K. P. Singh who pledged his mortal remains to the Aligarh Muslim University for the medical students. Prof. Singh’s gesture was unparallel and the university will always remain grateful to him, he concluded.

Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, Registrar of the University extended the vote of thanks. Prof. Imtiaz Hasnain and Dr. Ajay Bisaria also spoke on the occasion.

Prof. Jamal Ahmad Spoke on the World Diabetes Day

ALIGARH, November 13: Prof. Jamal Ahmad, Director, Centre of Diabetes and Endocrynology, J. N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University said that diabetes in India has reached epidemic proportions and is increasing with Tsunamic speed. He was speaking on the World Diabetes Day that is celebrated on November 14 every year and is an official United Nations World Diabetes Day, named to celebrate the birthday of Frederick Banting, who along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of Insulin. This day is marked with the global awareness campaign against Diabetes led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) that engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

Prof. Ahmad said that there is a tremendous increase in the complications associated with diabetes, especially in those who are not under optimal control. In India, diabetes is the single largest cause of legal blindness. A vast majority of patients undergoing renal dialysis and transplants have diabetes as the underlying cause. More than 75% hospitalized patients of acute myocardial Infarction (Heart Disease) either are known diabetic or undiagnosed. Associated with this disease, there is a substantial increase in mobility and mortality. It is also accepted that diabetes is the single largest cause of atraumatic amputation.

Prof. Ahmad said that India at present has 50 Million people with diabetes and more than 95% of this population is suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. However, it may be appreciated that not only the diabetes and its complications can be prevented but early diagnosis and optimal management can significantly decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with this dreaded disease. Further, a person with diabetes does not have to lose the lower limbs every thirty seconds if one takes simple steps to prevent its complications by prompt corrective action. Importantly, this does not require intensive and expensive investigations in most cases, but a basic understanding of the problem and management of diabetes which also causes nerve disease and peripheral arterial disease.

He said that it might also be noted that the incidence of Type 1 diabetes is also increasing. If a child complains of weakness, tiredness, weight loss otherwise eating well and having night bed-wetting or being hospitalized as a case of gastroenteritis, his blood sugar needs to be done. It is likely that he is suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. To save the life of such children, the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology of Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University with the help of pharmaceutical companies is providing free Insulin to all children especially the girl child up to the age of 21 years if they are attending diabetic clinic of the hospital regularly.

He appealed all diabetic persons to join the campaign to prevent all diabetic complications at the start of the diagnosis. Simply remember A.B.C. of diabetic management. “A” stands for Alc test that should be less than 7% (To be done every 3 three months); “B” for Blood pressure (should be less than 130/80 mm Hg) and “c” to keep LDL cholesterol less than 100 mg, Triglycerides less than 150 gm% and HDL- cholesterol more than 45 mg%.

Brisk walking for half an hour per day can prevent 500/0 diabetes. “Healthy Habits” (No smoking, No alcohol), “Healthy Food” (be a vegetarian and cut down the intake of saturated Fat, trans-fat and salt intake), “Healthy sugar” (Pre-meal blood sugar less than 100 mg%, Post-meal blood sugar less than 180 mg% and A1c less than 7%) “Healthy blood pressure” and “Healthy cholesterol” as mentioned above are the best management of diabetes, he added.

Prof. Ahmad appealed all to join the campaign to keep the people free from diabetes and its complications.

Kapil Sibal's Effigy burnt in support of the Ongoing agitation

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Student-agitation-continues-in-AMU-Sibals-effigy-burnt/articleshow/6804521.cms

ALIGARH: The ongoing student agitation at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for the revival of student union continues unabated here.

Angry students burnt an effigy of Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal last evening for not responding to respond to their plea.

They raised slogans against Sibal, accusing him of "protecting the AMU Vice-Chancellor who faces serious charges of financial bungling and is crushing the democratic rights of students to raise their voice against corrupt practices."

"We fail to understand what message the HRD Minister wishes to send to the youth of the country by his handling of the AMU affairs," spokesman of the agitating students, Mushtaq Ahmad told PTI.

The ongoing inquiry against the Vice-Chancellor and some senior university officials had been "deliberately put into cold-storage" for more than eighteen months now because some senior HRD officials were determined to put a lid on large scale financial bungling at the AMU, student leaders said.

Senior administrative officials yesterday persuaded the protestors to allow medical help to a student whose condition deteriorated after going on a hunger strike for the past six days.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Waseem Ahmad today met the students asked them to show restraint and not fall prey to the designs of any political party.

"It would be improper to rush to any conclusion regarding the HRD Minister as he has assured us this morning that he has an open mind on the AMU crisis and will consider all genuine demands of the students," he said.

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration has termed the ongoing agitation for restoration of students’ union on campus a threat to the healthy functioning of the university.

More than 150 agitating students have been holding a dharna in front of the V-C’s house since October 4. They blocked the entrance to V-C’s residence in the early hours of Friday. The V-C was moved from his official residence on the campus to a government guesthouse at midnight. However, the students are still on dharna outside V-C’s residence.

This wrongful restraint is the violation of his personal liberty and basic freedom which any citizen of India enjoys on the strength of his fundamental rights. http://in.jagran.yahoo.com/news/local/uttarpradesh/4_1_6839197.html

Condition of fasting AMU student worsens:The Hindu

Aligarh: The condition of one of the students on hunger strike for the past six days outside the Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor's residence demanding revival of the students' union deteriorated on Saturday, official sources said.

The sources said the authorities have alerted the Centre about the fragile peace on the campus.

With the student protesters squatting outside the gate of his residence, Vice-Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis has been confined to a government guest house outside the University campus for more than 48 hours. The students have been holding protests for more than three weeks now and despite an attempt on Friday night by top district officials, Prof. Azis turned down the students' demand for reviving the union which has been lying defunct for more than four years now.

Agitating students' spokesman Mushtaq Ahmed told PTI: “We have written several letters to the Union HRD Minister and two letters to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi highlighting that all we are seeking is the restoration of our basic democratic rights. Not only has the students' union been shut down but students' representation to the two main statutory bodies, the Academic Council and the University Court, has also been stopped. It is sad that neither Rahul Gandhi nor the HRD Minister has replied to us.” - PTI
