University shall provide training to a group of five engineering students
from the University of Malaysia, Sabah under a ten-week internship-training
program.
The training will be held under the supervision of Dr. Izharul Haq Farooqi
of Environmental Engineering Section. All the five students namely, Fong Kok
Wai, Yap Kah Jin, Chan Kah Yin, Claoston Anak Nardon and Asnul Hisyam B.
Mohd Ali will undergo the training in Advanced Environmental Engineering Lab
of the department.

Ex-student of IISB tops AMU exam

BURAIDAH: A former student of the International Indian School Buraidah (IISB), Sameera Qidwai, topped the B.Sc (Geology) Honors examination at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, and secured a gold medal.
“It is not easy to win a gold medal from a prestigious educational institution like the AMU,” she said. “But because I gave my full concentration to my studies, I fared so well.”
Qidwai, who is planning to come to the Kingdom to meet her parents, attributed her success to God, her parents, and teachers of the Buraidah school who helped her build up a strong educational foundation during her studies till Grade X at the school.
School Managing Committee Chairman Kaunain Shahidi expressed his happiness about the excellent academic achievements of present and former students and gave credit to the learning environment at the school.
“I would like to complete my master’s and would like to contribute positively through geology to my country India and my second home Saudi Arabia,” said Qidwai.
“You have to believe that you can do it, believe firmly in yourself and your will power and self-confidence will finally lead you to success.”

AMU Condoled the sudden demise of Dr. Iqbal Sabir

deeply condoled the sudden demise of Dr. Iqbal Sabir, Lecturer, Department
of History, who expired in running train near Bhopal recently.
After completion of his post graduation from Lucknow University in 1980, Dr.
Sabir joined the Department as M.Phil. student in 1982. He was awarded
M.Phil. in 1985 and subsequently Ph.D. in 1991.
He joined as Senior Research Assistant in the Department of History. Later,
he was appointed Lecturer and further he was promoted as Lecturer Senior
Scale.
Besides being keenly involved in teaching, he actively participated in the
overall corporate life of the University and he served as Warden of several
Halls of residences.
He authored at least two books and several research papers. He was actively
involved in guiding research students as Ph.D. supervisor. Dr. Sabir wrote
extensively on cultural and spiritual aspects of medieval India.
Being a good communicator, he was also an acclaimed teacher. He used to
drive his point of argument with passion but he was also open to fair
assessment and critical appreciations. His untimely demise has created a
void, which is difficult to fill.

AMU Old Boys to launch a campaign against the opening of the special centres

Aligarh: It is not very common for any alumni association to declare war against its own parent body. Certainly not when the institution enjoys enviable popularity and is as old as 110 years. But the Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association, comprising nearly 5,000 registered former students of the University are up in arms against what they are terming as a well designed move of the university administration to dilute the residential status of the AMU.
These old boys are led by veterans like former Rajya Sabha MP and visitor's nominee to the Executive Council of AMU, Wasim Ahmed and former tourism minister in Uttar Pradesh, Kawkab Hameed, just to name a few. They assert that these protests and agitations are their way of expressing their deep love for their Alma Mater. They assert that their chief concern is that if these centers are opened outside the AMU, students will flock to them as they will be closer home. AMU, they fear, will then lose much of its sheen that it has enjoyed in the last over one century.

AMU Busted a Gang of Proxy Admissions in Professional Courses
ALIGARH June 19:
A rate list for admission to various prestigious educational institutions of the country was found in Ranjeet Kumar’s possession where the gang used to plant fake candidates in admission tests for professional courses. Three cell phones, four sim cards, fake currency of one hundred rupees’ note, a PAN card, an ATM card, a cheque of Rs. 40,000, photographs of 14 youths, mark sheet and certificate of three students and a cash of more than one thousand rupees was found in his possession.
During interrogation, Ranjeet Kumar told that he was staying at a local hotel along with an accomplice under the fake ID, Vivekanand Chaubey. Accordng to Ranjeet, the head of the gang is Rohit who runs a racket for admissions in disguise of a coaching centre in Kanpur. The rate list found in his possession shows that the group charged a sum of four to six lakh rupees from a candidate willing to get admission in IITs.
In order to maintain complete transparency in its admission system, the Aligarh Muslim University had already constituted a ten member committee to minutely scrutinize and supervise the admission procedure for various courses.
Ranjeet Kumar, on finding his activities dubious and unlawful, was handed over to the Proctor where he confessed his crime. On the basis of the important documents recovered from him, he was handed over to the police at Civil Lines Police Station last night. Police has lodged an FIR and is investigating the matter in detail.

Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis Flagged off the team proceeding to AMU Malappuram Special Centre
ALIGARH June 19: Vice Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis in a brief function held yesterday evening flagged off the team proceeding to AMU Malappuram Special Centre. He has handed over all the documents relating to the AMU Malappuram Special Centre to the designated Officer on Special Duty, Prof. Mohammad Arif.
Addressing the gathering of University officials Prof. Azis said that it is a historic step in the direction of the expansion of Sir Syed’s dream and the great legacy of AMU to spread modern education far and wide. The overwhelming response the University is receiving from different states of the country bears testimony to the fact that AMU credentials as a secular and moder n education is well recognized across the nation. The passion and reverence with which the AMU team was received and welcomed at Malappuram, Murshidabad and Kishanganj shows that the initiative has ignited the hopes and aspirations of the people of the region irrespective of cast, creed and religion.
Prof. Azis urged the OSD, Prof. Mohammad Arif and Assistant Registrar Mr. Ataat Husain to work with a sense of diligence and dedication in carrying forward the great legacy of Sir Syed in the heartland of Malappuram.
The Government of Kerala which has already acquired and transferred 122 acres of land to AMU in March 2010 and is likely to transfer 150 acres in Phase II by June 2010, had insisted to appoint a Nodal Officer to make the Malappuram Centre functional in the current session.
In order to fulfill its commitment the proposal of starting MBA and BALLB programmes as an initial step was placed before the Academic Council on June 9, 2010 which was unanimously approved. The President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of AMU has already approved the West Bengal and Malappuram centres under Statutes 12(2) and the Government of India has also allocated Rs. Rs. 25 Crore and released Rs. 10 Crore for the Malappuram Centre.
In the backdrop of all these positive developments the Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis has taken concrete step to depute a two member team to Malappuram Special Centre. The two officers of the University will create the necessary facilities with the help of officers of the State and fully secure the land and facilitate the launching of two approved courses in temporary buildings. All these interim measures will continue as per the existing rules of the University and till the new ordinance were put in place.
The University has already engaged the services of Educational Consultancy India Ltd. (EDCIL) for preparing detailed Project Report. It is also under the process of wider consultations both outside and within the campus to set in motion a foolproof strategy for establishing world class state-of-the- art education facilities including a legal framework that protect the stated objectives of the University.
The efforts are in the anvil to lay a blueprint for establishment of a highly vibrant and modern centre of higher learning. To meet this end the University is sending Prof. Mohammad Arif, Department of Civil Engineering as Officer on Special Duty (Administration) at Malappuram Special Centre for a period of three months. He will be exercising general supervision and control over the affairs of the Centre and work under the directive of the Vice Chancellor. Similarly Mr. Ataat Husain, Assistant Registrar (Academic) will perform the work as Assistant Registrar at Malappuram.
Prof. Mohammad Arif is a senior faculty member of Aligarh Muslim University holding PhD from IIT Roorkee in structural dynamics with 26 years experience of teaching at AMU, Saudi Arabia and Roorkee.
The visiting team is headed by Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, AMU Registrar and comprising University Engineer Mr. Firoz Ahmad who will be back after overseeing initial arrangements while the OSD, Prof. Mohammad Arif and Assistant Registrar, Mr. Ataat Husain will stay back at the Malappuram Centre to accelerate the pace of evolving the centre into an educational hub of substance.
The OSD and his team will be reaching Malappuram today and hence a great step forward towards making qualitative education available at a region in Kerala where it is needed most.

Deputation of teachers to Mallapuram campus
ALIGARH, June 17: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University has ordered to transfer the services of Professor Mohammad Arif, Department of Civil Engineering, Zakir Husain College of Engineering & Technology to work as Officer-on-Special- Duty (Administration) at Malappuram (Kerala) Special Center on deputation basis, initially for a period of three months with effect from the date he assumes his charge.
The Vice Chancellor further ordered to transfer the services of Mr. Ataat Husain, Assistant Registrar (Academic) to work as Assistant Registrar at Malappuram on deputation.
Both these persons will continue to draw their salaries, plus deputation allowances as per University rules.

Prof. Iqbal Aziz Conferred Fellowship of Lucknow College of Surgeons
Aligarh June 16: Prof. Iqbal Aziz, Department of Jarahat, A. K. Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University has been conferred up on the Fellowship of Lucknow College of Surgeons for the Year 2010.
Dr. Aziz was conferred the Fellowship at the 3rd Convocation of Lucknow College of Surgeons held at C. S. M. Medical University, Lucknow.

Successful Trial of Spinal Cord Stimulator at JNMC, AMU
Aligarh June 14: A successful trial of spinal cord stimulator was performed by Dr. Hammad Usmani and Dr. Mozaffar Khan on a patient of failed back surgery syndrome at Pain Clinic of Department of Anaesthesiology, J.N. Medical College Hospital, AMU, Aligarh. The 4 days trial was performed on a patient of persistent radicular pain following disc surgery for sciatica. The patient showed significant improvement in pain after the trial period.
Sciatica is a relatively common form of low back pain and leg pain that is generally caused by the compression of lumbar nerves L4 or L5 or sacral nerves caused by compression of a dorsal nerve root from a spinal disc herniation (a herniated inter-vertebral disc in the spine). Most of the cases of lumbar disc herniation will be resolved with conservative treatment. However, in some patients surgery may be required to treat symptoms of sciatica. However about 10% of such patients had persistent pain even after disc surgery, the condition is known as failed back surgery syndrome.
The implantation of spinal cord stimulators was already performed in big cities like Delhi and Mumbai but in U.P this trial was performed for the first time. Prof. S. Bano, Chairman, Department of Anaesthesiolgy encouraged the team of Pain Clinic for the successful trial of spinal cord stimulator. Neurosurgeon, Prof. V.K. Shrivastava also gave his valuable inputs during the performance of trial.
The spinal cord stimulator is one of the most advanced modality for management of difficult pain situations i.e. persistent pain after disc surgery, diabetic neuropathy, peripheral vascular diseases, and complex regional pain syndromes. Spinal cord stimulation consists of stimulating electrodes, implanted in the epidural space, conducting wires connecting the electrodes to the pulse generator.
Consultant in Pain Clinic Dr Hammad Usmani told that the spinal cord stimulator is the best modality for treatment of such patients who did not respond to other conservative treatment. The only hurdle is the cost of treatment which is around thirty thousand rupees for trial of spinal cord stimulator and the cost of permanent placement of spinal cord stimulator is around 1.5 lacks. But on long term the device was found cost effective as compared to the cost and side effects of drugs and return to the normal life.

Revised Lists of MBBS, BDS and B.Tech. Courses and the Chance Memos
ALIGARH June 12: After the declaration of the provisional lists of candidates selected for MBBS, BDS and B.Tech. courses and the chance memos thereof, few internal students wrote requesting the reexamination of details given in their application forms. They believed that they were treated as 'external' candidates in spite of qualifying to be included among the 'internal candidates. The controller of examinations ordered the reexamination of their 'internal I'external' status as well as those of other candidates and it was found that there indeed existed some errors in the data base of the candidates provided to the coordinators for processing of the results. The Vice-Chancellor took the matter very seriously and ordered that the provisional select and chance memo lists be revised immediately according to the correct internal/external status of the candidates. He also constituted a three-member enquiry committee headed by Prof. Jamal Ahmad of Medicine Department to ascertain the reasons behind the wrong entries in the database. Other members of the Committee are Prof. Arif Suhail of Mechanical Engineering and Prof. Badar Alam Iqbal of Commerce.
The lists revised accordingly are being announced in suppression of the earlier lists. It may however be noted there are no changes in lists of candidates selected in general merit in all the courses. Also, the select list of MBBS of the internal candidates remains unchanged. There is a single change in the list of internal candidates selected in BDS and B.Tech. list and a small number changes in the chance memo lists of above mentioned courses.

MoU signed between AMU and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA
ALIGARH June 9: In line with its recent initiatives to expand its global academic and research linkage the Aligarh Muslim University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA to establish collaborative relations between the two institutions to promote friendship and cooperate in a mutually beneficial association.
The two premier institutions have agreed to encourage mutually fruitful cooperation in disciplines that are studied in both the institutions.
The two institutions shall seek to promote exchange of information and material that were of mutual interest. The MoU also emphasized the exchange of academic, administrative, research staff and visits of scholars and students.
Te agreement was signed between Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, Registrar, on behalf of Aligarh Muslim University and the leader of the visiting team, Prof. Afroz N. Taj of Department of Asian Studies, University of North Carolina.
This agreement will remain in force initially for a period of five years. It especially aimed to establish the terms and conditions that facilitate the summer programme of North Carolina University during which their students could visit AMU.
A Special meeting of academic council held at AMU
ALIGARH June 9: A special meeting of the Academic Council today approved the recommendations of the Board of Studies of the Department of Law and Department of Business Administration respectively for starting BALLB and MBA courses at the Centres of Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Malappuram (Kerala) for the Session 2010-2011.
The University stands committed to provide the required facilities to launch the above programmes. The University is closely in contact with the governments of Kerala and West Bengal to create the required infrastructure so that teaching be started in a best performing way.
AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis appealed to all the members of the Academic Council to submit proposals regarding academic courses so that the proposals are forwarded to the consultant engaged by the University to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The Academic Council also approved the teaching and administrative posts and other infrastructure for running special centres at Murshidabad and Malappuram.
The University Academic Council has also approved the proposal for creating a “Directorate of Schools” from the Session 2010-2011.
Prof. Mohammad Zahid Invited to Present Research Paper in International Conference in London
ALIGARH June 9: Prof. Mohammad Zahid of Department of Urdu, Aligarh Muslim University has been invited to present research paper in two-day international conference on Urdu literature in new localities to be held in London University on June 18-19, 2010. The conference is being organized by the Urdu Society, School of Oriental and African Studies.
Prof. Zahid will present his research paper “Attraction of Motherland and Pains of Immigration: Urdu Creative Literature in New Localities”. Educationists from all over the world are expected to participate in the conference.
Prof. Zahid had represented AMU at an International Conference also held in London University in 2006. He is a widely travelling person and has visited Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and Mauritius to participate in international conferences.
Prof. Zahid has also served the University in administrative capacities besides his academic responsibilities. He has held several important administrative offices in the University. He has been nominated member of Executive Council and Court of Agra University twice by the Governor.

AMU has established the Directorate of School Education
ALIGARH June 8: The Aligarh Muslim University has established the ‘Directorate of School Education’ with immediate effect, to manage all the schools being run and maintained by the University. Further modalities will be notified separately.
Earlier, the Executive Council at its meeting held on January 17, 2008 considered and approved the recommendations of the committee headed by Prof. R. P. Singh, Retired Joint Secretary, MHRD and former Principal, Regional College of Education, Ajmer. Forty-five students of Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology Selected in Campus Interview
ALIGARH June 8: Forty-five students of Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University have been selected in campus interview carried by two reputed companies of the country, Kunal Kancham (P) Ltd. and Computer Science Corporation, NOIDA.
Training and Placement Officer of Engineering College, Dr. (Cap.) Farid Mehdi said that Kunal Kancham (P) Ltd. has selected four students of Civil Engineering while Computer Science Corporation has finally selected 41 students of computer, electrical, mechanical and civil engineering and two students of MCA.
He further said that students selected by Kunal Kancham will get a package of Rs. 1.8 Lakh salary per annum during the training period while Computer Science Corporation will pay Rs. 3.5 Lakh salary per annum to the selected candidates during the training period.
He said that the selection procedure consisted of a written test followed by interview rounds. “Detailed appointment letters will be sent by the concerned companies to the College shortly”, Dr. Mehdi added.

Prof. Shahryar to conferred upon with a D.Sc. degree by the University of Hyderabad
ALIGARH June 8: University of Hyderabad has decided to confer D. Sc. Degree (Honoris Causa)on Prof. A. M. K. Shahryar at the 12th Annual Convocation of the University scheduled to be held on June 22, 2010.
The Vice President of India, Mr. Mohammad Hamid Ansari will be the Chief Guest and deliver the Convocation Address.
Prof. Shahryar is a former Professor of Urdu at the Aligarh Muslim University. His poetry was translated in several foreign languages including English by the Sahitya Academy.

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Monday directed the Aligarh Muslim University not to open its special centre in Malappuram and admit students to any course without putting in place sufficient infrastructure and complying with the norms of the university.
The Bench comprising Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice P.S. Gopinathan passed the interim order on a writ petition filed by High Court lawyer K. Janardhanan.
The interim order would remain in force for 10 days. The court also directed the Centre and the State government to express their views on the proposal to set up the centre at Malappuram. According to the petitioner, the university's proposal to set up the centre is against the Aligarh University Act and Rules. As per the university law, a centre can be set up only within a 25-km radius of the mosque of the university.
The university was taking steps to set up the centre without making any amendment to the university law. Besides, he contended that the centre was going to be set up in a building constructed long back for housing a hospital.
In fact, the building did not have sufficient infrastructure. He sought to restrain the university from starting the centres at Malappuram.

Nearly 150 suspended since Aziz took over as VC
The intolerant Aligarh Muslim University administration inched closer to a landmark 150 student suspensions under the current Vice-Chancellor on June 3, when it suspended Adil Hossain of MA, Mass Communication.
Hossain, from West Bengal, is the 149th student to be suspended or rusticated during the term of VC PK Abdul Aziz, according to the RTI data compiled by former AMU student Shahzad Alam.
Hossain is not new to suspension. He was suspended last October for being part of a student unrest following the murder of an AMU student.
He had been the current administration’s most vocal and credible student critic. He had always stuck his neck out, and had no qualms coming on record with his comments to The Indian Express about various issues despite the possibility of a witch-hunt.

LUCKNOW: After installation of the 57 CCTV cameras, night vision devices and other high-tech gadgetry worth Rs 10 crore to keep a 24x7 vigil on the campus, the vice-chancellor office seems to have imposed an official gag order in Aligarh Muslim University. This week saw yet another student Mohammad Adil Hussain served with suspension order for raising a voice against the autocratic functioning of university authorities.
Adil, incidentally, becomes the 148th student to have earned the wrath of V-C Professor PK Abdul Azis. Prof Ajis holds a record of sorts for having ordered such a large number of suspensions over the past three years of his tenure, says Shazad Alam, a student and RTI activist. With students getting more and more vocal and paranoid about the official surveillance, the number is likely to rise in coming days.
The terse memo signed by proctor Mohammd Zubair Khan on June 3 accuses Adil of "indulging in rumour-mongering, canard-spreading and defaming the AMU and also "depicting the entire institutional infrastructure and administrative apparatus in poor light". The post-graduate student of mass communication stands guilty of "resorting to and misusing the internet to tarnish AMUs image." The proctor specifically mention `Adil"s misinformation campaign against the CCTV cameras' and the hints that the maintenance money was being usurped by authorities.
"This is nightmarish ... they are trying to hit out at the freedom of expression," Adil told TOI on phone. "I fell out of favour for speaking my mind off particularly on Siras controversy (the gay professor who was caught on camera having sex with his partner and suspended. He later committed suicide) and then on CCTV," he said, adding "I was the fist student to have criticised the university stance on Dr Siras and berated the security system forced on us." Though disturbed, the young man stands by his convictions.
Out of 30,000 students, not even 30 favour camera on campus, says Afaq Ahmad, an M Phil student who has been under suspension since April 22 for voicing his concern at the draconian measure. "One never thought things would come to such a pass in AMU," he said.
The issue is expected to figure prominently in the meeting convened by the AMU Old Boys Association and AMU Old Girls Association on June 19. Meanwhile, charging Azis with unleashing a rein of terror on the campus, a delegation of AMU court is slated to meet President Pratibha Patil this month, Wasim Ahamd, former MP Aligarh and member of university court told TOI on Saturday. "Students are no terrorist and each of them is feeling oppressed, thanks to the security circus," he said.
"Apart from being highly objectionable, AMU becomes the first university to put its student under watch. The security paraphernalia also points to the extent of financial irregularities the university administration is involved in," he said, adding "the V-C has cleverly skirted executive council in the matter and went ahead with purchases."
AMU PRO Dr Rahat Abrar however challenges the contention and claims that the executive council not only sanctioned the security devices but even suggested deployment of CISF on the campus."The arrangement aims at deterring trespassers and criminals from invading AMU and is vital for ensuring security and safety of all -- even those who are needlessly opposing it," he said.

Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a felicitation programme to welcome Dr. Rakesh Kumar Khattar who has been appointed as District Programme Officer, Aligarh under National Rural Health Mission, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
Prof. Zulfia Khan, Coordinator, Polio Project of AMU welcomed the chief guest Dr. Khattar. She briefed the role of AMU in Polio Eradication Programme and highlighted the problems faced by staff and patients at two UNICEF health clinics at Jeevangarh and Mahfooz Nagar, run by the Department of Community Medicine.
Dr. M. Athar Ansari, Chairman Department of Community Medicine presented the details of various projects and schemes running in the department. He emphasized the role of the department in reducing the community resistance in polio programme and improving the Vit. A coverage not only in Aligarh but also in Lakhimpur and Sitapur districts.
Dr. Sakeena Mushfiq presented an overview of the polio project and its achievements especially the routine immunization coverage in under five children.

These students are on a study tour where they learn Hindi Urdu languages and Indian history and culture.
The group of students of University of North Carolina is headed by Dr. Afroz Taj, Associate Professor of South Asian Languages and Literatures.
Dr. John Coldwell of the University of the University of North Carolina said that his University is interested to establish collaborative relations between the two institutions to promote friendship and to cooperate in a mutually beneficial association.

NEW DELHI: An Aligarh Muslim University student, Md. Adil Hossain, has alleged that he has been placed under suspension for speaking out against the university' stand on the issue of homosexuality and for using the RTI Act to seek information against what he alleged “financial bungling at AMU”.
A student of M.A. (Previous) Mass Communication, Adil has alleged that he has been penalised for criticising the suspension of Dr. Siras for his alleged homosexual orientation and his subsequent death. The student has alleged that the university has punished him for speaking about Dr. Siras's suspension in the media and on his blog.
“Probably I am the first student in the entire country to face suspension from any educational institution for criticising the present administration on account of financial bungling as proved in the Principal Accountant General's Report on the Internet as mentioned in the suspension order,” Adil alleged.
“I am also being victimised by the AMU administration as I openly lashed out against them during the controversy surrounding Dr. Siras. I am also the only student who spoke out against the Local Intelligence Unit, the official spy agency of AMU, which snoops on its students and teachers …I have filed numerous RTI application on the LIU and financial bungling at AMU and I think I am also being targeted for that,” Adil has alleged in his letter.
However, AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said Adil has been suspended for various incidents of indiscipline including blocking the road and protesting against a power cut caused by a storm. “There was a storm and the university's power supply was disrupted. He instigated other students to stage a protest, even though there was no electricity in the entire area because of the storm.”
‘Defamatory remarks'
The spokesperson said Adil also made defamatory remarks against the university when a student lost his life while trying to cross a railway track. University officials said a detailed inquiry will be conducted and Adil will be asked to appear before the committee conducting the inquiry.

ALIGARH June 3: A team of twenty-one students of the University of North Carolina (USA) met the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis at his residence.
These students are on a study tour where they learn Hindi Urdu languages and Indian history and culture.
The group of students of University of North Carolina is headed by Dr. Afroz Taj, Associate Professor of South Asian Languages and Literatures.
Dr. John Coldwell of the University of the University of North Carolina said that his University is interested to establish collaborative relations between the two institutions to promote friendship and to cooperate in a mutually beneficial association.

Centre for Promotion of Science at AMU organized a Refresher Course in Science Subjects
ALIGARH June 2:* The Centre for Promotion of Science, Aligarh Muslim
University successfully organized a Refresher Course in Science Subjects
(PCB) for teachers from Muslim Managed Educational Institutions and an
Introductory Science Course for teachers from Deeni Madaris.
Prof. Rashid Hayat Siddiqui, Department of Civil Engineering and Prof. A.N.K
Yusufi, former Chairman, Department of Biochemistry gave away the
certificate of participation and gift books to the participants. A total
number of 36 participants (20 in Refresher Course and 16 in Introductory
Science Course) were felicitated at the valedictory programme.
Earlier Prof. Naheed Banu, Director, Centre for Promotion of Science
welcomed the guests and presented an introduction of the Centre. Prof. Banu
also paid rich tributes to the founding Director of the Centre Late Prof.
Asrar Ahmad. Dr. Hisamuddin conducted the programme.
The participants found the courses very useful and relevant and expressed
desire to participate in the similar courses organized by the Centre in
future.
Mir Wilayat Husain Gold Medal for BDS Toppers

University has been selected for the award of Mir Wilayat Husain Gold Medal.
The decision was taken in a meeting of Mir Wilayat Husain Education Trust
Fund Committee chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University
Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis.
The committee has also decided to award Mir Wilayat Husain scholarship to
the topper of BDS Entrance Test, Danish Suhail, topper of BDS First Prof
(2008 batch), Shazli Aslam, topper of BDS Second Prof (2007 batch), Hina
Javed and topper of BDS Third Prof (2006 batch), Huda Husain of 2009-10
academic session.
Similarly the topper of BDS Entrance Test, Dhiraj Kumar Singh, topper of BDS
First Prof (2007 batch), Bhumika Kapoor, topper of BDS Second Prof (2006

Mother of Khwaja Haleem and Khwaja Shahid died at J. N. Medical College
ALIGARH June 1: Mrs. Ayesha Bano, mother of senior leader and former Minister of UP, Mr. Khwaja Haleem and President of AMU Old Boys’ Association, Delhi, Mr. M. Khwaja Shahid died at J. N. Medical College today. She was 86. Mrs. Ayesha was suffering from cancer.
The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis met the bereaved family and paid condolences on the sad demise of Mrs. Bano. Prof. Azis prayed for peace to the departed soul and courage to the family members to bear the sorrow.
