Prof. Saud Alam Qasmi Addressed a Seminar on “Relevance of Quran in Contemporary Times

ALIGARH August 23:Prof. Saud Alam Qasmi, Dean, Faculty of Theology and
renowned Islamic Scholar while addressing a seminar on "Relevance of Quran
in Contemporary Times" organized by the Law Society of Faculty of Law, said
that the Holy Quran is relevant for every community, region and era. The
most convincing proof of this fact, he said, is that the science developed
with a pace after the revelation of Quran as never. He pointed out that
before the revelation of Holy Quran and out of their ignorance, people took
physical phenomena as charismatic and considered them God. The Quran taught
them to disseminate, understand, and utilize such natural physical phenomena
with wisdom and scientific reasoning, which ultimately resulted in the
galloping progress in the field of science.

Prof. Qasmi said that law and morality both are essential for guiding the
masses. He pointed out that Taurait was the collection of laws while Bible
contained the moral guidelines only. But the Quran encompassed both for the
complete guidance and salvation of mankind. The humanity can never be saved
against the social and moral ills without adopting Quran in life.

Prof. Qasmi said that Allah has sent Prophets to every nation and region
from Hazrat Adam to Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) but they were not relevant for
every time and had limited approach while Quran holds relevance for all the
times to come.

In his welcome address, Chairman of Law Department, Prof. Iqbal Ali said
that whatever science has discovered is already there in Quran.

Dean of the Law Faculty and President of Law Society, Prof. Mohammad Shabbir
drew the attention to the fact that media is engaged in Anti-Islam
propaganda but Islam is spreading fast because its teachings are based on
humanity. Prof. Shabbir said that the main aim of the law Society is
character building and development of the personality of students with an
emphasis on making them aware of current affairs.

Incharge of Law Society, Dr. Shakeel Samdani said that most important
relevance of Quran is that wherever people are practicing teachings of
Quran, there is peace and justice. He said that if all the Muslims lead a
life according to the teachings of Quran, the social evils like violence,
terrorism, illiteracy, deprivation and marginalization will come to an end.
He said that it will also help eliminate misunderstandings among
non-Muslims. Joint Secretary of Law Society, Tausif Raza proposed a vote of
thank. The programme commenced with the recitation from Quran by Hafiz Iqbal
Lashkar.

Dr. M. Karthikeyan, Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune delivered a lecture on “Role of Chemoinformatics in Academics and Industry

ALIGARH August 19: Dr. M. Karthikeyan, Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune delivered a lecture on “Role of Chemoinformatics in Academics and Industry” at a programme organized by the Department of Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University.

While thanking for the invitation to share his thoughts on the subject of his specialization, Chemoinformatics and highlight the opportunities for students and faculties of chemistry, Prof. Karthikeyan said that Chemoinformatics basically helped to design chemicals with desired properties and also guide us what to make and how to make?

He said that the subject is very popular around the globe especially in USA, UK, Canada, Japan and Europe. A lot of job opportunities and research positions are available in those countries. In US, about five thousand people are involved in this field of study and they are earning approximately 3000 crore rupees per annum. Even in India we have several industries like Jubilant Biosys, GE, GVK-Hyderabad, Ranbaxy, Lupin, Parimal, Advinus, Chembiotech, Tata Chemicals etc., that have separate departments for Chemoinformatics.

Dr. Karthikeyan said that in academics, a bachelor's course (B.Sc. Level) in chemoinformatics is already functional in south India at Lady Dock College for Women where students are pursuing M.Sc. and PhD in Chemoinformatics. He urged that courses in Chemoinformatics should also be started at different institutes and universities in India. There are several JRF positions available in chemoinformatics for the students with chemistry, biology, computer science background. Unfortunately due to lack of knowledge and experience the students were not available for these positions.

He clarified that additionally the combination of Chemoinformatics and Bioinformatics allows studying the problems in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and drug design with a battery of specific methods. He urged the department to start a course in this area.

Earlier, Prof. Syed Ashfaque Nabi, Chairman, Department of Chemistry introduced the guest. Prof. Zafar Ahmad Siddiqui proposed vote of thank. Dr. Amjad M. T. Khan conducted the programme. A large number of faculty members and students were present in the lecture.

Hands-on-workshop in Ultrasound guided Central Venous Access, Focused Echocardiography in Emergency Life Support

ALIGARH August 9: The Department of Anaesthesiology, JN Medical College, AMU has extended its horizon of Anaesthesia practice. The department has conducted for the first time a Hands-on-workshop in Ultrasound guided Central Venous Access, Focused Echocardiography in Emergency Life Support (FEEL) and the Nerve Blocks for Regional Anaesthesia in collaboration with SONSOTIE. The workshop was Chaired by Prof. S. Bano.

Dr. S. Moied Ahmad, Incharge, ICU, JN Medical College and the Coordinator of the programme said that the central venous access and the nerve blocks are usually performed on the basis of their anatomical landmark causing high incidence of complications and failure rates. Ultrasound guided procedures have drastically reduced the incidence of complications and failure rates. It has also reduced the time taken to perform the procedure and improved patient comfort. Further, the clinicians are able to accept complicated cases. He said that very few hospitals in India have been able to incorporate it as a protocol for patient management both due to lack of experience amongst the clinicians and logistics. However, National Institute for Center of Excellence (NICE) has made it a guideline for insertion of central venous catheter. Since then USG guided venous access has been widely accepted internationally.

Dr. Ahmad said that recently, Echocardiography has been used to identify the probable causes of Asystole and Pulse less Electrical Activity (PEA) cardiac arrest. He, however, hoped that in near future it is expected to be in the algorithm of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. This would enable to speed up the specific management and improve the prognosis of Asystole and PEA arrest.

Prof. S. Abrar Hasan, Dean Faculty of Medicine, in his speech mentioned that learning is a continuous process and such type of workshop would definitely help the budding clinicians achieve perfection and improve quality of patient care.

Prof. Ashraf Malik, Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, J. N. Medical College said that the Department of Anaesthesia is pioneer in innovative ideas and has been always playing a key role in improving the academic environment of the Medical College. At the end of the program certificates was distributed to the participants.

The teachers of the department, Prof. M. Siddiqi, Prof. S. Haleem, Prof. A. Quadir, Dr. S. N. Jamil, Dr. Q. E. Ali, Dr. H. Usmani, Dr. H. Amir, Dr. Abu Nadeem, Dr. Obaid along with about 50 senior and junior residents of the department attended the programme.

Students Demand Justice: VC Apologize for Al-Qaida remarks and fulfill our valid demands

Long time back in 1999 Vice-Chancellor Mahmoodur Rahman (An IAS Officer with close links with the BJP Government at Centre) said in The Times of India, “AMU Students bristling with ISI agents”. It caused immense damage to the image of our alma mater. Students from Aligarh Muslim University were denied jobs, people looked at them with suspicion and above all as an after affect a student from AMU Mr.Mubeen was picked up from the VM Hall in broad daylight and later branded as “terrorist”. Even today the Hindutva brigades quote that and try to malign our image.

Cut back to 2007. A time when Shivraj Patil was the Home Minister, when news of serious bomb blasts and indiscriminate illegal detention of the Muslim youths were commonplace. During the tenure of Shivraj Patil later another bloody episode happened and that was Batla House Encounter, the Govt. is still mum on this issue. Why Delhi Police killed some Azamgarh boys without proper evidence to link them with any terrorist activities remains unanswered. During this time some sections (RSS group) always jumped to conclusions in any case that “Muslims are terrorist”, our Vice Chancellor Prof.P.K.Abdul Azis, who is said to be the guardian of 30000 students of Aligarh Muslim University joined the same belief by agreeing with the fact that there may be chances that AL-QAIDA/TERRORISTS are linked with an incident of student violence at AMU. We all know at this moment CCTVs are installed at the hostels of only a single university i.e. our alma mater. Vice-Chancellor said in THE INDIAN EXPRESS on 18 April, 2010 “The initiative to upgrade security came from the Union Home Ministry “. The Vice-Chancellor sent a proposal to the Ministry for grant of Rs.10 crore and today we can see the unprecedented surveillance on AMU students worth crores of rupees. When we want books, we want hostels, we want better labs, better infrastructure, government cites lack of funds but everything was sanctioned in the name of “surveillance at AMU”. But why such interest by the Indian Government in the security of our University when they have been silent even after massive violence in other campuses?

In a TOP SECRET letter, the DM & SSP, Aligarh sent a letter to Chief Secretary(Home), UP Ministry( Copy sent to VC, AMU vide R. No 1771/VC dated 06.12.2007) with the subject SECURITY PROPOSALS AT AMU it was stated on page 2, “Jammu Kashmir & Tamil Nadu are such places where Separatist/Terrorist forces are at work, and student from such places study at AMU, therefore we can’t deny the possibility that in the disguise of students or as their relatives such forces may come to take shelter here”. The VICE-CHANCELLOR by remaining silent on this highly objectionable report and by installing CCTV here only fuelled to the oft-held belief that AMU students are terrorists. Why did he remained silent on such a report knowing that it maligns the image of our university and no one writes like this for any other university in India? And above all, as if the Vice-Chancellor sold all our interest to the same tainted Home Ministry under Shivraj Patil, he silently allowed the recording of the minutes of a meeting with the HRD Minister Arjun Singh on 29.10.07 wherein it states, “THE CHANCE OF TERRORISTS/ AL-QAIDA LINK ON THE INCIDENCE OF VIOLENCE NEED TO BE EXAMINED AT DEPTH” and “ THE VISIT OF A PAKISTANI JOURNALIST AND HIS MEETING IN THE UNIVERSITY BE REPORTED WITH DETAILS”( Refer to a letter sent by P.K.Mishra, Director, Internal Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs to the DGP, UP and VICE-CHANCELLOR, AMU vide Ref. No I.11034/1/2007-IS-IV dated 17th October, 2007). We the students of AMU, who dream for a secure future and for a life without threat at our campus wish to question the Vice-Chancellor on whether he knows the gravity of linking AL-QAIDA with AMU students? We the senior students see a possibility that tomorrow AMU students won’t get a single job anywhere with such allegations against them by their own Vice-Chancellor. We also feel that those meritorious students who wish to visit or study US/UK or other foreign countries will be debarred from entering such countries as we all know how the world hates the word AL-QAIDA. Why did our own Vice-Chancellor try to brand AMU as having links with AL-QAIDA inviting danger to all the 30000 students of our alma mater? Will he protect us when in the future when referring to this report, Police or Intelligence Bureau will pick up innocent Muslim students from AMU and let them face inhuman torture in illegal detention? The Answer is a BIG NO. We demand that Vice-Chancellor immediately seek unconditional public apology to the students, staff and Old Boys of Aligarh Muslim University for his grave mistake well published in media and dismantle the whole security infrastructure based on such highly objectionable report and inform the Centre that nothing of this sort can be thought of regarding our alma mater.

This Vice-Chancellor, besides linking an unfortunate incident at AMU with AL-QAIDA, has created an atmosphere where students are rendered voiceless and many of their grievances are demanding attention.

1. We reject Faculty-wise allotment of students in Halls- We demand that Vice-Chancellor stop such senseless allotment where senior and internal students are the worst sufferers. Students from all subjects earlier used to live together in a hostel where they grow a collective affection and inculcate general knowledge. By appointing teachers from the same faculty as Provost & Wardens Vice-Chancellor imposed a highly objectionable plan on us to suppress us by own teachers who give us marks in sessionals and viva.

2. End Dining Hall Corruption- Whereas the Dining Charge is Rs.710/month, some hostels charge Rs.300 as deficit and some Rs.20. With the same Aligarh market, with the same prices of food grains why such differences in the quality and cost of dining charges? You ask the reason! Be ready to get suspended or NRSC. Immediately end the culture of deficit and improve the quality of Dining Hall at AMU. End corruption there.

3. We demand Reduction of fees by 90%- During this Vice-Chancellor regime, the cost of every form has increased manifold unseen in the history of Aligarh Muslim University. The cost for the admission in the courses like BA/MA even doubled in this session. AMU authorities even charged for duplicate admit cards like never before. We the senior students are greatly concerned with such fee increase that has happened under a Vice-Chancellor who is known for his corruption. So we demand reduction of the existing fee structure by 90% which will benefit the poor students. We demand that AMU examination forms be sold at Rs.50 for all courses and draft/slip should be of Rs.50 like earlier.

4. We demand that the 200 year old Sulaiman Hall gate be opened immediately whose closure has caused great inconvenience for the library goers and above all the residents of Sulaiman Hall.

5. Even after allocation of 2692.61 lakhs for CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT by the UGC under XIth 5 year plan why is there no bike stand for the students which will cost merely 10 lakhs per Hall?

6. AMU off-campus centres won’t serve the interest of Muslims without reservation (Aligarh Campus has more Muslims for its historic character) and minority character and will erode the rich traditions and culture for which AMU is know from its residential character at Aligarh. We demand that decision for establishing Centres be taken back immediately and request Central Govt for full-fledged minority university in the backward regions.

7. We demand that Vice-Chancellor stop behaving callously to the cause of minority character by not sending its counsel for consecutive 3 hearings at the Supreme Court and remain focus to fight for it till we get it.

8. We demand that Moulana Azad Library be opened for 24 hours and allowed for +2 students so that meritorious students can get the benefit of better academic ambiance. We also demand that Canteen facility be provided of international quality in most of the halls and that a Central Students Canteen be opened 24 hours.

9. We demand that District Administration/Police should be kept out of the campus except in emergency situation with serious violence. We strongly reject their vigilance upon us and meddling in the day to day affairs.

10. We strongly demand campus wide wi-fi facility immediately as promised by the Vice-Chancellor back in 2008 or by room wise free internet through cable points as in IITs and others university hostels.

11. We strongly demand that the scholarship process be made transparent and published on AMU’s official website and AMU announces many more Scholarship schemes for needy and meritorious students.

12. AMU administration is known for its draconian crackdown on the students who do not get proper opportunity to defend themselves before the Disciplinary Committee. We strongly demand students’ representation in the Disciplinary Committee and balance in defending and prosecuting team.

13. We strongly demand that the Students Grievance Redressal Committee be immediately abolished because it’s defunct, has no statutory validity like AMU Court and Academic Council where already student should be present, and because its members are the puppets of University Administration as they are selected not elected.

The time has come that we all students should fight tooth and nail to save our image from such grave accusations like AL-QAIDA and get our valid demands fulfilled. Be Ready!

Prof. T. K. Venkatasubramaniam Delivered Prof. S. Noorul Hasan Memorial lecture at AMU

ALIGARH August 3: Noted historian Prof. T. K. Venkatasubramaniam of Delhi University said that art is a complex subject of scientific enquiry and aesthetic cognition at each stage of development.

He was delivering Prof. S. Noorul Hasan Memorial lecture on “Interdisciplinary, music, history and the Tamils” at the Centre of Advanced Study, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University. Prof. Venkatasubramaniam stated that the current state of discipline of History in India is one where there is considerable debate about ‘academic’ histories. The search for alternatives to ‘academic histories’ stem from the banal question; Was there history writing in India before the colonial intervention? Search for pure uncontaminated vernacular sources point out to a tension regarding ‘the place’ of the people in projects of nationalist modernity.

Referring a chronological account of the history of music in Tamil Nadu, Prof. T. K. Venkatasubramaniam said that well marked political changes can serve as markers. Age of Sangam and Silappathikaram provide the foundation of musical thought and culture. This stage is marked by ‘sacrifice’ characterized by ritual practices. Azhwars and Nayanmars made use of music as a medium to propagate their religious dogmas in the next stage.

He said that the large implications on globalization and its cultural landscape and Diasporic imagination on the modalities of reception, consumption and representation of classical music is yet to be studied. The cultural politics of globalization has implications for the cultural agenda of the nation state in the twenty first century.

Earlier, Prof. B. L. Bhadani, Chairman, Department of History welcomed the guest and said that Prof. Noorul Hasan contributed a lot in the up-gradation of the Department to its present status as a Centre of advanced study. Prof. C. P. S. Chauhan, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences presided over the function while Prof. Tariq Ahmad proposed vote of thank.

AMU VC Press Conference: REVISED

ALIGARH August 1: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis today said that the University has made significant advancement to improve the quality of teaching and research and expansion of the University by establishing two AMU centres at Malappuram in Kerala and Murshidabad in West Bengal.

Addressing a Media Conference Prof. Azis said that he idea of AMU Centres in Muslim concentrated regions has captured the minds of the people and the Government of India has decided to unlock the potential of AMU for the educational uplift of the people inhabited in distant regions.

Prof. Azis said that the University Court in its special meeting held yesterday overwhelmingly supported the initiative of establishing AMU Centres and almost unanimously approved the amendments passed by the Academic Council and the Executive Council and stated that now legal track is clear and all the roadblock is removed to further carry forward the process of establishing new AMU Centres.

Regarding the PIL and the Court meeting the Vice Chancellor said that the court has clarified that “no clarification is required as the subject matter pertains to subordinate legislation” and the University Counsel’s clarification that ‘in view of the above the University might proceed with Court Meeting for the legislative business on July 31, 2010 in respect of the amendments /legislation in the Statutes as per its agenda’.

To set at rest the confusion and doubts expressed by a small group, Prof. Azis said that once the President of the country as Visitor of the University has approved the centres, there cannot exist any legal infirmities as the Visitor approves the proposals only after due scrutiny and wetting from expert officials and legal entities.

He was categorical in clarifying that the establishment of new centres is a University agenda approved by the statutory bodies of the University. He observed that the admission policy of these centres when commenced would be the same and the University will conduct the admission test for MBA and BALLB at Aligarh, Calicut and Kolkata.

Replying to a question Prof. Azis said that the University has suspended four students in 2010 and 2 were given migration certificate. In 2009, only 3 students were rusticated and one student was allowed to continue his studies.

Explaining the background he said that in 2007-2008, the University has taken very harsh decision under unprecedented situation to rusticate and suspend a large number of students in view of the murder of three students and burning to ashes of VC’s Lodge. Prof. Azis further pointed out that 99.5% students of this university are very peace-loving, disciplined and very cooperative.

AMU Vice Chancellor said that the up-gradation of J. N. Medical College will be completed by March 2012. He said that the Government of India has sanctioned Rs. 150 Crores for the expansion of Medical College under Pradhan Mantri’s Swasthya Yojna (PMSY) and the work has already been assigned to a professional government entity.

Referring to the allegation that democratic rights of AMU students were being undermined the Vice Chancellor said that the students were enjoying the right to air their grievances through Grievance Redressal Committees at department and hostel levels. The Vice Chancellor assured that the Students’ Union will be revived when the time is ripe.

The Vice Chancellor further added that the University will welcome the healthy discussion on contemporary issues and debate and felt that their skills are the part of the University system. The literary and cultural clubs in the halls of residence and the General Education Centre are the main avenues available for the students to promote their literary and cultural skills.
