A Consultative Meeting of the EC Members

ALIGARH November 3: The meeting of the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University scheduled for today stand adjourned for want of quorum. Out of 16 members, 14 were present. The adjourned meeting of the Executive Council will now be held on November 27, 2010.

An informal consultation was held with Executive Council members and a consensus arrived on the proposal of the Union Minister of HRD, Mr. Kapil Sibal presented by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis to hold the AMU Students’ Union election on November 13, 2010.

The consultative meeting felt that the examination schedule announced by the various faculties and finally notified by the Controller of Examinations should not be disturbed. The members also agreed to the completion of various other tasks lined up for November and December 2010 like the foundation stone laying ceremony of Murshidabad centre, work related to admission of students and recruitment of staff to Malappuram and Murshidabad centres.

The members felt that the election process for restoration of Students’ Union be started on January 14, 2011 and completed within ten days.

The members also felt that the Vice Chancellor should appoint a committee of EC members to prepare a draft-regulation in the light of the Lyngdoh Committee report and submit to the Vice Chancellor for approval. The meeting also agreed that the Vice Chancellor could appoint a Chief Election Officer to start the process as soon as the new regulations are in place.

The meeting was apprised of the Supreme Court directives relating to JNU Students’ Union elections wherein it mentioned that holding the elections without following the Lyngdoh Committee report is a prima facie contempt of Supreme Court’s order. The meeting felt that the university cannot hold election of the Students’ Union bypassing the Lyngdoh Committee report.

The members expressed resentment over the political interference by various political parties. They wanted everyone to respect the autonomy of the University and honour its Vice Chancellor.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis today appealed to the students to withdraw their Dharna forthwith in the light of firm action being initiated by the University for holding the election and restoration of the Students’ Union.
