Aligarh Muslim University Students called off Dharna

ALIGARH December 20: The agitating students of the Aligarh Muslim University called off their dharna yesterday night following a discussion between the students sitting on dharna and the university administration.
In a meeting between fourteen students and the university administration consisted of Registrar, Prof. V.K. Abdul Jaleel, Controller of Exams and Admission, Prof. Pervez Mustajab and OSD (Development), Prof. Akhtar Haseeb yesterday evening.
It was resolved that election process of the AMU Students’ Union will be started from 3rd January 2011, as already announced. The election of the Students’ Union shall be held as per Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations and the Supreme Court’s order in letter and spirit.
It was also decided that the election of representatives of the University Court will also be held along with AMU Students’ Union election. Every bonafide student is allowed to participate in the elections of the AMU Court.
The suspension of five students involved in the dharna was revoked yesterday. These were Mohd. Ibraheem, Mr. Adeel Ahmad, Mr. Syed Umar Ahamd Qadri, Mr. Mohd. Osama Shamsi and Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad.
The process in negotiation carried out with the involvement of Mr. Basheer Kunnail, a very senior old boy and Mr. Irshad Ahmed, Member of the University Court.
The District Magistrate, Mr. Ravindra Naik, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Satendra Veer Singh, Additional District Magistrate, Mr. C.P. Singh and Superintendent of Police, Mr. M.S. Chauhan played a very positive role in resolving the issue.
AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor P.K. Abdul Azis thanked them for maintaining law and order in the campus. He also thanked the students for agreeing to end the dharna and for creating peaceful academic environment in the campus.
By 11 pm in the late night, the Vice Chancellor, Professor P.K. Abdul Azis along with the District Magistrate, Senior Superintendent of Police, AMU Registrar, Controller Examination & Admission, Dean Students’ Welfare, OSD (Development), Additional District Magistrate (City) and Superintendent of Police (City) went to the dharna site and addressed the students together with the students representatives.
AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor P.K. Abdul Azis said, “we all should start a new chapter in AMU by becoming partners in regaining the glory of this institution”. He further said that the Students’ Union is being restored with a great hope that its activity will create a ‘union of hearts and minds’ in the AMU campus and we all live like ‘one family’.
The District Magistrate, Mr. Ravindra Naik, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Satendra Veer Singh, students Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad and others also addressed the gathering.
Vice Chancellor entered his Lodge after 78 days along with some students and the University Officials.
