Ghulam Nabi Azad for Chancellor, NOT AN AMUTA PROPOSAL

It may be a personal opinion of Mr.Jamshed Siddiqui, secretary AMUTA.
No such proposal  has been even discussed in the general body of the Association. In fact
a vast majority of teachers and Muslims in general is aghast at the idea of
polticization of AMU campus ,be it invitation to Mr Rahul Gandhi or any other
pure politician.

Both the pro VC and anti VC groups are trying to appease the ruling party to settle
their political scores at the cost of the institution.

I will suggest Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad to read a very revealing interview by
some British socialactivist working in Kashmir for the past 20 years, published in
Times Of India on 29th January. She has been helping mentally ill people.
Her data based study reveals that in 1989 there was only one Mental Hospital
in the valley and on the average only patient was treated daily,by 1995 the figure
reached 350 patients a day and now 90% population is affeccted by some Mental Disorder.

I will request Mrs Soniya Gandhi to send Mr Azad to Kashmir to heal his brothers
and sisters .It will be far better for the health of her party and the people.

AMUTA to propose Ghulam Nabi Azad as Chancellor

Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University Staff (Teachers) Association has decided to propose the name of Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad of the post of Chancellor for the University.

This was stated here today by the Seretary of the AMU Staff Association Jamshed Siddiqui at a function of the Association in honour of Azad.

Siddiqui said Azad could play a key role to help the institution to achieve greater heights in the field of higher education.

The Association' s stand came ahead of the annual general meeting of the AMU court, the university's highest governing body, here on Sunday.

Under the AMU constitution, the AMU court elects by a simple majority the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Honorary Treasurer.

The decision of the teachers body to propose the name of Azad is understood to have the support of the dissident group in the AMU court.

Senior University officials had earlier claimed that former Chief Justice of India A M Ahmadi, who is also the incumbent Chancellor, would be unanimously elected as the university's Chancellor.

Azad's sudden visit to the AMU has, however, given a new twist to the race for the top post.

Medical test: Azad assures AMU students of 'appropriate action'

ALIGARH: Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday assured medical students of AMU that he would initiate "appropiate action" on their claim of irregularities in the admission tests conducted for post-graduate seats in the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College under the university.

Azad gave this verbal assurance after he was he was accosted by students while he was on a surprise check at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college on Thursday.

Azad was visiting the Aligarh Muslim University at the invitation of the university staff association when he suddently decided to pay a "surprise visit" to the JN medical college.

The students got a whiff of his visit and blocked his way while he was coming out of the medical college building.

When contacted a senior official of AMU said a three member inquiry committee had already been instituted into the allegation raised by some students and it was expected to submit its reports within a day or two. He added that action would be taken on the basis of this report.

Meanwhile, during his visit to the medical college, Azad is reported to have expressed his "strong displeasure" at the "pathetic condition" prevailing in different wards of the medical college hospital.

Later, addressing members of the teaching staff of the AMUA at a reception given in his honour, Azad expressed his concern over the absence of "basic facilities" at the hospital of an institution which carries high reputation in India and abroad.

Antioxidant values and other nutritional components of the North Indian vegetables

ALIGARH, January 24: Dr M. Masroor A. Khan, Reader, Department of Botany, AMU, Aligarh was awarded with a research project sponsored by the Council of Science & Technology, UP, Lucknow last year. The project aimed at studying the antioxidant values and other nutritional components of the North Indian vegetables. Antioxidants protect us against diseases and ageing, therefore are important tools in gaining and preserving health. The work of the project is underway with the help of a Research Assistant, Mr. Tariq Aftab and the results obtained so far are very promising. The results indicate that the vegetables evaluated may provide a potential source of dietary antioxidant and therefore their consumption should be encouraged. The antioxidant values are high in vegetables such as beetroot (chukandar), spinach (paalak), cabbage (Phoolgobhi) , ripe tomatoes (tamatar) and gradually decrease on boiling or cooking. But surprisingly, on boiling or cooking tomatoes, the antioxidant property of them rose up to a particular extent.

Cooking of food is an important factor that has impact on antioxidant capacity. Some vegetables are commonly eaten cooked (potato, pea, cabbage, brinjal etc.) while others are consumed raw or cooked (onion, carrot, radish, tomato etc.). Therefore, it is the need of the hour to develop the methods which can provide the protection of antioxidant values of the vegetables from heating. According to Dr. Khan the research is in progress in the same line.

Dr. Masroor A. Khan is also carrying another interesting research project on increasing the medicinal values of some essential oil-bearing medicinal plants through a safe technique of gamma radiation. This project is sponsored by Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai.

Kindly note the following changes to the SU 2010 program:

1. The course "Symmetry and development of modern Physics" by Professor Faqir C. Khanna, scheduled for March 8 - 10 has been cancelled. 2. The dates for the course "National movement and current historiography" by Professor Irfan Habib, originally scheduled for February 11-13, has been changed to February 22 - 24. This is due to an unfortunate mix-up in

Sunday morning, when the weather was very severe in Aligarh due to biting cold, at exactly 11.30AM Prof Irfan Habib, Prof. Emeritus reached the venue i.e. Common Room of M.M.Hall to deliver the lecture as part of Motivational Lecture series. Residents of M.M. Hall welcomed him and introduced themselves so that he could get a feel of the audience as to which faculty they mainly belonged. Programm started with the recitation from the holy Quran. I had the privilege to formally welcome and introduce the learned legendary figure for the benefit of freshers amongst the residents. Prof. Habib then started speaking and within few minutes when the venue was full to capacity he mesmerized the students with his words of wisdom. His full concentration was on how to prepare for various competitive examinations. He deliberated upon all the three aspects, Objective type, Subjective type of questions and the most important aspect i.e. Interview. Giving various examples he explained in a very lucid manner all the things. It was rare opportunity for the residents to interact with an authority of his subject. Students asked number of questions from the learned speaker. After the lecture an interactive session was also arranged. Residents were so excited that they wanted to continue the session for a longer period even after 2 hours. Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr.Tasdeeq Ahmad, Senior Hall. Prof. Mehmoodur Rahman Khan Afridi is no more with us

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalaam Alaikum

I am sorry to inform you about the sad demise of Prof. Mehmoodur Rahman Khan Afridi yesterday evening in Aligarh, who was Head Department of Botany and Dean, Faculty of Sciences at A.M.U.

He was an academician who was a great philanthropist. Nobody could miss his enthusiasm or fail to notice his gracefulness. He had been an excellent guide to many of us when he shared his expertise in his subject, education and society per se which he had acquired during his formative years at Oxford while doing his PhD and later as an renowned scientist in Plant Physiology. Firm believer of the saying “teach to fish, rather than provide a fish everyday”

Many of us must have known him as Founding Member of Duty Society and through his active association with Sports as a Badminton Player during his University days and later as member of University Sports Committee.

He always had the inherent desire to help people, and do as much as possible for the needy. A loss to the family, his students, well wishers and for the society as a whole.

In this moment of great sorrow let us join together and sent our condolences to his son Masood Afridi (famously known as Mamoo), based in Dubai.

"I begin in the name of Allah, Most Kind, Most Merciful. From Muhammad, Allah's Messenger to Mu'az- Ibn-Jabal. May the peace of Allah be on you. I praise Allah before you, the One besides whom there is none worthy of worship.

After praising and glorifying Allah, (I say the following.) May Allah give you great reward and may He guide you to exercise patient endurance and may He (also) guide us and you to be grateful to Him

Surely, our souls, wealth and families are wonderful gifts from Allah Azza Wajalla which He has loaned to us so that we may take benefit from them for a set period; and he takes them away after the termination of that period Thus, gratitude becomes binding on us when He gives, and patience becomes obligatory when He takes away.

Your father was also from among the wonderful gifts (of Allah) and a loan (from Him) AIlah enabled you to enjoy him in away that was both enviable (to others) and pleasing (to you); and now, in return for great reward, mercy and forgiveness providing you exercise patience- he has taken him away from you.

So do exercise patience and do not let your bewailing and complaining destroy your reward, for you will be sorry (if this happens) Know that bewailing and complaining does not help bring back anything nor does it repel grief and sorrow. And whatever is to happen is set to happen.

"May you be in peace. Amen"

He leaves behind his son and two daughters married and based in Aligarh.

R-L: Dr Manzoor Alam, Chairman, IOS, Justice A M Ahmadi, Justice V N Khare, Syed Shahabuddin, Z M Khan, Secretary General, IOS

By Mumtaz Alam Falahi, TwoCircles.net,

New Delhi: For fifty years after Independence, Muslims had not demanded reservation. But after 1980 India’s largest minority community started slipping from the level of other minorities. Now that they have realized it, they are demanding reservation to come at least to the level of 1980 status, and so their demand is genuine, said former Chief Justice of India and presently Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Justice A M Ahmadi.

He was delivering presidential speech at the book launch program for “Readings on Minorities: Perspectives and Documents, Vol. IV (Freedom of Religion), edited by late M Iqbal Ansari. The book and its earlier three volumes have been brought out by Institute of Objective Studies. The program that featured stalwarts of the legal fraternity – besides Ahmadi, Justice V N Khare, former CJI, Justice Rajendra Sachar, former Chief Justice, Delhi High Court, and others – was organized by IOS at Constitution Club in New Delhi on January 6. The book was released by Justice V N Khare.

Justice A M Ahmadi urged the government to go beyond the measures of tokenism and take some affirmative action to uplift the minority community.

Earlier, K Rahman Khan, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, in his speech called upon the society to seriously think about remove misgivings and misconceptions about freedom of religion – the theme of Ansari’s book.

“Minorities are suffering discrimination in India. When minorities are discriminated on the basis of religion, we should find its resolution not only in the Constitution but also outside through dialogues. Society, human rights activists and social activists should come to remove misgivings and misconceptions about freedom of religion,” Khan said.

While negating that there is any big clash between majority and minority, Justice Rajendra Sachar, former Chief Justice, Delhi High Court, said a civilized society is where the rights of minorities are safe.
