Condolence Meeting for Prof. Mohammad Mahmoodur Rahman Khan Afridi

*ALIGARH January 9:* A condolence meeting was held at the Department of
Botany, Aligarh Muslim University to express profound sense of grief and
sorrow on sad demise of Prof. Mohammad Mahmoodur Rahman Khan Afridi who
served the department and the University with distinction for more than
three decades.

Prof. Afridi was born on 07.05.1931 in Farrukhabad district of UP. He did
his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from AMU, Aligarh and obtained Ph.D. degree in 1960 from
UK. His works on nitrate reductase is widely acclaimed and cited even today.
He joined as lecturer in 1951 in the Department of Botany. Earlier he also
served as Science teacher at Tibbiya College AMU. He became Reader in 1961,
Professor in 1978 and retired from University services on 31.05.1991.

Prof. Afridi's field of specialization was Plant Physiology. He was a
distinguished scientist in this field and established a plant nutrition
laboratory at AMU to study the macro nutrients. He got more that 100
research papers published in National and International journals of repute
and attended several national and International conferences.

Prof. Afridi supervised 8 Ph.D. and several M.Phil. students. He was
President of Indian Society for Plant Physiology. He was a dedicated
teacher, a very devoted researcher, supervisor and a committed person who
was always ready to help students. His contribution to corporate life of the
University shall not be forgotten.

Prof. Afridi also served as Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, Head of the
Botany Department, Manager, Abdullah Nursery School, Convener, Professional
Courses, President, Gymkhana Club and Member of Several Committees of AMU.
He was also founder member of Sultan Jahan Coaching Centre.

Prof. Mohammad Mahmoodur Rahman Khan Afridi is survived by a son and two
daughters.
