Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis writes to UGC chairman to put AMU on the list of universities that get Sci Finder

A demonstration was organized in the cultural hall of M.A. Library regarding the subscription of Sci-Finder and Inform Packages. Mr. Sandeep Sharma from Informetics India, Ltd. Bangalore, gives a presentation of ABI Inform, while Mr. Anand Singh from Sci-Edge Information, Pune presented a demo of Sci-Finder. It was attended by a large number of research scholars and faculty members. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis also joined the demonstration for about 25 minutes.

1. ABI Informa; a database from INDEST Consortium

“Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST) Consortium” was established in 2003 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on the recommendation of an Expert Group. About 45 centrally-funded Government institutions including IITs, IISc Bangalore, NITs and few other institutions are core members of the INDEST Consortium.

Out of a number of packages available through INDEST, ABI Informa contains approximately 4000 journals costing Rs. 3,83,960/-. The list includes 24 print journals worth Rs.3,52,652 being subscribed by the library for various departments.

2. Sci-Finder : Since 1907, Chemical Abstracts Service has indexed and summarized chemistry-related articles from more than 40,000 scientific journals, in addition to patents from 51 authorities and 10,000 journals, conference proceedings and other documents pertinent to chemistry, life sciences and related fields. Since 1995 Chemical Abstract Services started online service called SciFinder ( now available at the cost of Rs 20 lacs.)

Maulana Azad Library had been subscribing ‘Chemical Abstracts’ since 1965. From 2010, the service will be available online through SciFinder, which is a leading research tool providing access to 5,649 online journals in addition to Chemical Abstracts

It is, however, an important research tool which helps in accessing the World’s largest collection of Chemical, Biochemical, Biotechnological and chemical engineering and other related information.

INFLIBNET, under the aegis of UGC, provides free access to Sci Finder to select Universities in India. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor has written a letter to the UGC Chairman to put AMU on the list of universities that get Sci Finder free through UGC-Infonet.
