AMU hosts Open University debate competition



Aligarh: As part of the Republic Day celebrations week, the Mohsinul Mulk Hall Literary & Cultural Society on "Is demand for creation of new states a necessity or political gimmick?" at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized an Open University debate competition recently.

Three prizes in each of the three languages i.e. Urdu, Hindi and English were given to the winners.

In Urdu, the first prize was bagged by Mr. Mohd. Asif of S.S. Hall (North) while the second prize was given to Mr. Md. Aslam of S.S. Hall (South) and the third went to Mr. Md. Saqib of M.M. Hall.

In Hindi Mr. Mukesh Kumar of M.M. Hall, Perveen Kumar of V.M. Hall and Harish Kumar of N.R.S.C. won the first, second and third prizes respectively.

In English, the first prize was awarded to Mr. Shafey Anwarul Haque of Sir Ziauddin Hall, second prize to Mr. Nadir Ayubi of Hadi Hasan Hall and third to Mr. Mohd. Naiyar Rehman of N.R.S.C.

The programme was presided over by Dr. Shakeel Samdani, Coordinator, General Education Centre who presented an analysis of the topic in his presidential address.

The esteemed judges of the debate were Prof. Mohammad Aleem and Dr. Mohammad IIyas for Hindi, Mr. Mohammad Ayub from Urdu and Dr. Rashid Nehal and Dr. Syed Faiz Zaidi from English.

Speaking on the occasion the chief guest and AMU Registrar, Prof. V.K. Abdul Jaleel dwelt at length about the plans and programme for the all round development of the university.

He also emphasized the need of speech and debate competitions for the proper grooming of students personality.

Prof. Jaleel appreciated the efforts of Provost, Dr. Suhail Sabir to make M.M. Hall a hub of Literary & Cultural activities and to create a campus culture in the hall characterized by decency and discipline.

Prof. Ainul Haque Khan took a journey down the memory lane and became nostalgic while describing his association with M.M. Hall as a resident member in mid sixties.

He assured all possible help to the students from his office while addressing the students.

Earlier, Dr. Suhail Sabir, Provost M.M. Hall accorded a formal welcome to the distinguished guests.

In his welcome speech, Dr. Suhail Sabir presented a detailed report of literary activities in the hall.

Prof. V.K. Abdul Jaleel distributed the prizes to the winners and Prof. Ainul Haque Khan gave away certificates of merit to the students who got prizes.

Mr. Arshian Ansari and Mr. Ashyam conducted the proceedings. Dr. M. Shamim, President, Literary and Cultural Society proposed the vote of thanks.

Wardens of the hostel Dr. Md. Younus Ali Khan, Dr. Rizwanur Rehman Khan, Dr. Abdul Aziz Khan and Mr. Ghufran Ahmad were present on the occasion.
