25th Eye Donation fortnight of Government of India organised at JN Medical College, AMU

ALIGARH, September 14: The Eye Bank of Institute of Ophthalmology, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University observed the 25th Eye Donation fortnight of Government of India. During the fortnight various programmes were conducted at different parts of Aligarh. A programme of eye donation pledge was organized by Kutumb Samajik Sanstha, Aligarh in which 191 persons took pledge to donate their eyes. They were issued Registration Cards from Eye Bank of Institute of Ophthalmology, AMU, Aligarh.
Similarly, two awareness programmes for eye donation were organized at Hotel Melrose Inn in association with Indian Medical Association Aligarh Branch and Lions Club Aligarh. Awareness programmes were also organized at Iqra Public School and Al Barkaat School, Aligarh.
Prof. R. R. Sukul, Director, Institute of Ophthalmology delivered a highly information lecture on blindness in India, eye banking and eye donation. Dr. Adeeb Alam Khan, Incharge, Eye Bank of Institute of Ophthalmology said that anyone can donate his or her eyes. Donors can be of any age from 1 to 75. He said that people above 75 years may also donate their eyes for medical education and research purposes.
Dr. Khan said that about 6.5 billion people in the world are blind out of which 1.2 billion reside in India. There are 3 million people in India suffering from corneal blindness out which about 1 million are children.
