An article in The Hindu

NEW DELHI: A Right to Information application filed by a former Aligarh Muslim University professor in the Botany Department has revealed that the university is spending large sums of money in payments to the enquiry committee constituted to undertake the Presidential inquiry into alleged financial irregularities by Vice-Chancellor Abdul P.K. Azis.

Prof. Ziauddin Ahmad, who filed the RTI in August, said: “In excess of Rs. 43 lakh has been spent till September 15 to take care of the expenses of the two-member inquiry committee though the actual inquiry proceedings are yet to begin.”

The meetings of the inquiry committee so far have only established the modalities and the framework of the inquiry while the actual examination of evidence will take place from October 23 to 26.

The two-member committee which consists of Justice B.A. Khan and Justice Devicha was constituted in April and is the second committee to be constituted to inquire into alleged financial irregularities of the V-C. The first committee was constituted in July 2009 and dissolved in September 2009 after differences arose among its members.

“It should not have taken so long to appoint a second committee after the old one had ben dissolved. The second committee was to submitt its report two months after its constitution. It is yet to be known when the committee will come out with its findings and they are taking home a hefty salary each month,” Prof. Ahmad said.

The expenditure of over Rs. 43 lakh was incurred under heads such as payments of salaries and perks to the judges, legal expenses paid to advocate Eijaz Maqbool, committee office rent and salary for office staff, travel expenses and petty expenditure.

According to Prof. Ahmad “Mr. Eijaz Maqbool, the appointed advocate, is also the university representative. However, the inquiry is against Prof. Azis and not the university. Hence Mr. Maqbool need not have been appointed. Yet he has been appointed and he will represent the V-C who should hire and pay for iis own lawyer.”

“Further, when inquiry proceedings are instituted against an official, the usual practice is either suspension or to send the person on leave. In this case the V-C has been allowed to retain his position questioning the fairness of enquiry proceedings,” Mr. Ahmad added.

AMU public relations officer Dr. Rahat Abrar said: “The inquiry is not just against the V-C but also against those who have made the allegations. Moreover, we are following directions of the Government of India with regard to the expenditure including the pay to the judges and other payments.”

Professor R. Rajaraman, Emeritus Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University today inaugurated a two day National Seminar on Contemporary Trends in Nuclear Physics at AMU

*ALIGARH October 20:* Professor R. Rajaraman, Emeritus Professor at

Jawaharlal Nehru University today inaugurated a two day National Seminar on

Contemporary Trends in Nuclear Physics at the Aligarh Muslim University.

He spoke on “Elementary Particles” and suggested that the modern theory of

Nuclei should be studied in context with the new concepts of particles.

In her presidential address, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Abha Laxmi

Singh said that the interesting feature of this national seminar is that

popular talks have been arranged by the organizers. She said that she

considered Physics as the king of sciences. Since India has decided to

supplement its energy requirement with the nuclear reactors in a big way,

research in Nuclear Physics is expected to pay an important role not only

for the advancement of knowledge but also for achieving the developmental

goals of the country.

Prof. Mohammad Zafar Khan, Chairman, Department of Physics at AMU pointed

out that such seminars create confidence in younger groups of researchers

and provide opportunities to diversify their research. Besides this, it

motivates the fresh students to pot a research concern.

He said that AMU’s Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments in

North India established in 1908 and the department has a long tradition of

quality teaching and research.

He further said that during the period 1929-30, Professor Rudolf Samuel, a

German Physicist was appointed on the recommendation of Einstein. He, along

with Dr. R. K. Asundi, a famous spectroscopist, established a research

laboratory in Atomic and molecular Spectroscopy and formed a research group.

In 1949, the then Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zakir Husain invited Dr. P. S. Gill

to build up a first class University department. Dr. Gill started research

in Cosmic Rays and Experimental Nuclear Physics in a big way.

Professor Wasi Haider, Co9nvener of the National Seminar said that twenty

special lectures will be delivered on a wide range of topics covering

Nuclear theory and some areas of Experimental Nuclear Physics by eminent

scientists.

He said that Professor Rajaraman has contributed immensely to the fields of

High Energy Physics, Nuclear Theory, Quantum Field Theory, Soliton Physics.

He did his PhD from Cornell University, USA under the supervision of Nobel

Laureate Prof. Hans A. Bathe.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/AMU-students-boycott-food-put-utensils-at-VC-home-in-protest/Article1-616067.aspx

Demanding restoration of the students' union, resident students at the Aligarh Muslim University on Thursday boycotted their meal in the hostel and placed cooking utensils outside the Vice Chancellor's house. A large number of students residing at the VM Hall and Habib Hall boycotted their afternoon meal and took out a procession carrying the utensils from the dining hall to the VC's residence.

They placed the utensils in front of the gate of the Vice Chancellor's lodge, where some students are on indefinite hunger strike since October 5.

The students are demanding restoration of their union, which was dissolved in 2007, and the removal of senior University officials whom they blame for rusticating more than 150 students during the past three years.

Spokesman of the student protesters, Mushtaq Ahmad, told mediapersons that they are holding such peaceful protest to express solidarity with those students who are on an indefinite hunger strike.

"We are determined to continue our peaceful protest until the university authorities decide to hold elections to the students union which has been defunct for more than four year now," he said.
