Summer Vacations Declared: Approved by the Academic Council

The Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, on behalf of the Academic Council, has approved the Summer Vacations for the year 2011 in the University and its maintained institutions including University Schools to be observed from 1st June to 31st July 2011.

The Summer Vacations in the Faculty of Medicine shall be observed in two halves of 38 days each for teaching staff from 17.05.2011 to 23.06.2011 and from 24.06.2011 to 31.07.2011. The summer vacations for MBBS students (Final Prof. Part-II Batch-2007), MBBS (Final Prof. Part-I Batch-2008) and MBBS (II Prof. Batch-2009) will start from 11th June to 30th June while MBBS (I Prof. Batch-2010) will start from 10th July to 31st July.

The summer vacations for the students of BDS First year Batch-2010 and Second year Batch 2009 will start from 12th July to 31st July 2011 while for the students of BDS Third year Batch-2008 the vacations will start from 21st June to 10 July and for BDS Final year Batch 2007, it will start from 1st June to 20th June.

The summer vacations for the Faculty of Unani Medicine will be notified later.

AMU team met the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, USA delegation at New Delhi

*ALIGARH March 31: *The AMU team led by the Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K.
Abdul Azis today met the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), USA
delegation at New Delhi and shared wide range discussion on collaboration
between American Universities and the Aligarh Muslim University.

The CIC consisted of America's top research universities consisting of
University of Wisconsin, Purdue University, Pennsylvania University, Ohio
University, University of Chicago, University of Illinois, Michigan State
University and University of Minnesota.

The discussion included facilitating more number of Master and doctoral
students to work in these Universities for short term periods, provision for
work for teachers is one to two years in the American Universities.

On the other hand, the American counterparts expressed interest in sending
American students for learning Persian, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and other Indian
languages. They also showed interest in Indian history and culture and the
Unani system of medicine.

Another idea discussed was the scope of participants of these Universities
in the academic activities of special centres AMU plan to establish in West
Bengal and Kerala.

The idea of community colleges were also discussed that would encompass the
job oriented senior secondary and undergraduate programmes.

The seven-member CIC delegation included Prof. Tenneth Shatire, Director,
India Initiatives (Wisconsin University), Prof. Aseem Ansari, University of
Wisconsin, Wolfgang Schiloer, University of Illinois. AMU team included
Prof. M. Saleemuddin, Prof. Javed Akhtar and the Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K.
Abdul Azis.

AMU Delegation meets Bihar CM

PATNA February 4: Establishment of the special centre of Aligarh Muslim University in Kishanganj was brought on fast track by the State Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar this morning. In a presentation meeting held today at the Chief Minister’s Office in Patna Mr. Nitish Kumar directed the State Officials to place the issue of allotment of 250 acres of land for the AMU Centre in the next meeting of the Cabinet to be held on 9th or 17th February .

While discussing the details of the proposed centre with AMU team led by Vice Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis the Chief Minister has expressed happiness over the fact that the AMU model includes the school system also and urged the visiting team to specially focus on needs of the local people of the region. Putting emphasis on teachers training Mr. Nitish said that out of two lakh teachers in the State one lakh teachers are untrained and asked the Vice Chancellor to workout a programme for starting quality training for these teachers.

The Chief Minister said that there is a huge demand for nursing, pharmacy and college of education in Bihar and this fact must also be incorporated while building the center. In the power point presentation the Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis explained the genesis of conceiving the center and the process of their establishment. He has thanked Mr. Nitish Kumar for providing 250 acres of land within 6 months on fast track basis. In order to facilitate the establishment of the center in Kishanganj and making it functional from the next academic session, the Vice-Chancellor urged the Chief Minister to transfer the land in the name of AMU free from all encumbrances by the end of this month. In response to this request, the Chief Minister said that as per the states rules, the land could only be leased for a period of 30 years and subsequently renewable and of course leasing state government’s land as good as transferring ownership. The Vice-Chancellor has also asked for providing 30 meters wide road connecting the campus to the state / national highways and construction of electricity sub-station as well as providing drinking water within an uninterrupted supply. Besides this the visiting team requested sewage treatment plant, surface area development, internal cabling and providing basic statistics of the proposed land.

Team from AMU was asked by the Chief Minister to visit Kishanganj after 17th February and assured that by that time the cabinet will approve the allotment of land to AMU. The Chief Minister asked the state official to simultaneously start widening of road work and the other civic amenities required for the center. He has also asked the AMU team to start working on the project relating to Kishanganj Center without waiting for the formal approval. The AMU team was represented by the Vice-Chancellor AMU, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis, Prof. Ekram Hussain, Prof. N. A. K. Durrani, Prof M. Saud Alam Qasmi, Prof. Javaid Akhter and Member of Parliament from Kishanganj Maulana Israrul Haque who is also a member of AMU Court was also present on the occasion.

The news of establishment of the center and the positive steps of the state government is envisaging has brought cheers and happiness among the wide section of people of Bihar in general and Kishangnaj in particular.

Five Member AMU Team to Meet Bihar Chief Minister Regarding AMU Center in Kishanganj

ALIGARH February 3: A five-member team led by the Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis will be visiting Patna to meet the Chief Minister of Bihar, Mr. Nitish Kumar at his office on February 4, 2010.

The visiting team will be presenting a PowerPoint presentation before the Chief Minister, ministers and other officials. The PowerPoint presentation will include a brief history of AMU and the new vision for Special Centres of the AMU to be established in West Bengal, Kerala and Bihar.

The visiting team would be expressing gratitude to the government of Bihar for giving 250 acres of land free of cost to the AMU for opening its Centre in District Kishanganj instead of Katihar as earlier approved by the University authorities.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis will also present a memento to Mr. Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar.

AMU delegation will also visit Kishanganj. Other members of team are Prof. Javed Akhtar, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Prof. Saud Alam Qasmi, Dean, Faculty of Theology, Prof. N. P.K.Abdul Azis is visiting Kerala to inaugurate the educational confernce at
Jamia Nooriya Arabic College Faizabad P.O. Papallikard in Malapurpuram
distict and to attend the meeting of the executive council of Central
University of Kerala on January 11,2010 ,the senior most dean Prof Ziauddin
Khairoowala, Dean faculty of Commernce shall discharge the routine duties of
the Vice Chancellor during his absence.

AMU Felicitated Professor Abul Kalam Qasmi

ALIGARH January 2: The Aligarh Muslim University felicitated one of the illustrious faculty members, Professor Abul Kalam Qasmi, Department of Urdu for awarding India’s top most literary recognition “Sahitya Academy Award” for his Urdu book “Maasir Tanqueedi Rawaiyye”.

Profesor Qasmi has authored a dozen book and 125 research papers so far. He has ben honored with UP and Bihar Urdu Academy Awards, UP Governor’s Literary Award and Iftikhar-e-Meer Award.

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis in his presidential remarks expressed deep sense of appreciation of the literary accomplishments of Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi. He urged the faculty members to devote their time with a specific purpose and new wave of enthusiasm be created in AMU for academic excellence and new year will bring a large number of laurels to the University.

ON this occasion, Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, Registrar, Professor Khurshid Ahmad, hairman, Department of Urdu, Prof. Masudul Hasan, former Dean, Faculty of Arts also addressed the felicitation functfion.

AMU : VC Appeal to MPs

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis has appealed to the Muslim Members of Parliament and intelligentsia to come forward for the educational development of Muslims of the country and promotion of the Aligarh Movement. Prof. Azis urged them to support the University efforts for restoration of its minority character.

Prof. Azis was addressing a gathering of Muslim parliamentarians and intelligentsia at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Mr. K. Rahman Khan, Minister of State for Railways Mr. E. Ahmad, former deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Mrs. Najma Heptuallh, Maulana Asrarul Haque Qasmi, Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Burq, Mr. Shareefuddin Sharique, Mr. Moinul Haque, Mr. Ali Anwar Ansari, Mr. M. I. Shanavas, Mr. Abdul Wahab Peevee etc. and assured their cooperation in the development of the University.

Mrs. Najma Heptuallh while commenting on the PowerPoint presentation of the University said that the way the University administration has presented the detail of developmental work before the Muslim Parliamentarians reflects its sincerity. Mrs. Heptullah said that the glorious academic traditions of AMU need further expansion and assured that she will make all efforts to help the establishment of special centre of Aligarh Muslim University in Bhopal.

The Member of Parliament from Kishanganj Maulana Mohammad Asrarul Haque Qasmi said that Aligarh Muslim University is a minority institution and it is our responsibility to extend all support to it. Terming University’s move to establish of five special centres of Aligarh Muslim University in distant areas of the country as the need of hour, he said the decision would provide the best opportunities to Muslims of the country who are lagging behind and this affirmative action of the University is in line with the national aspiration to include in the education fold the most excluded social class.

Member of Parliament and AMU alumnus Mr. Shareefuddin Sharique said that being an alumnus of the University he knows that the majority of University students were always in favour of maintaining peaceful academic environment in the campus and it is the handful of miscreants that bring all the bad name to the University. He said that the Vice Chancellor of the University should be supported from all quarters in maintaining peace, tranquility and academic vibrancy in the campus.

Rajya Sabha MP Mr. Ali Anwar Ansari requested the Vice Chancellor to adopt an affectionate approach towards the suspended students who have no criminal records and allow them to continue their education.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis presented the introduction of the University, promotion of female education and the secular and residential character of the University through PowerPoint. Prof. Azis also shed light on the course of development that the University was able to make during the last two years. He said that new courses have been started and the University for the first time in its history has received a massive grant of Rs. 185 Crore from the University Grants Commission under XI plan.

Prof. Azis said that research activities have been given new impetus and information technology has been developed to the level that every department and residential hall has been made an ICT hub and the internet facility has been expanded to each and every department and hostel. The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College has been granted Rs. 150 Crore by the Government of India for its upgradation to the status of AIIMS. Similarly a comprehensive plan has also been put into action for upgrading the standard of the University managed schools.

The other prominent personalities that attended the meeting included former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Mushirul Hasan, former Vice chancellor of Jamia Hamdard Mr. Sirajuddin, Maulana Abdul Wahab Khilji, Chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission Mr. Kamal farooqui and former Indian diplomat Mr. Ishrat Aziz.
