AMU to Re-open on 13th May 2011, instead of 18th May 2011.

ALIGARH May 9: The Aligarh Muslim University has decided that now the University will be reopening few days earlier on May 13, 2011 and the hostel facilities to final year B. Tech and all final year students of other faculties will be made available from May 13 itself. Earlier the University had notified May 16 as the date of reopening in a phased manner. The examination of all these courses will commence from May 18, 2011.

The decision was taken in a consultative meeting with all the Provost, Officiating Registrar, DSW, Proctor and Controller of Examinations chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis.

The Vice Chancellor urged the Provosts and their team to play an important role and dining hall facilities should be provided to the students from the day one of its opening.

Prof. Azis said that Honorary Secretary of AMU Teachers’ Association and the Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology had requested sufficient time for students to prepare the examinations scheduled to commence on May 18,2011. He said that he has consulted the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Controller of Examinations and the decision to pre-pone the re-opening was taken keeping in view the interest of the students. It was decided to open the University from May 13, 2011 for B. Tech. Final Year students and the students of Final Semester of all other Faculties as well.

The University has also decided to provide accommodation to all internal boys at Allama Iqbal Hall and all internal girls at the Abdullah Hall who are appearing in the entrance tests of B. Tech/B. Arch on the production of admit card. The test is slated for May 14, 2011. The B. Sc. I year and II year students who are appearing in the test for B. Tech will also be accommodated in their respective halls of residence on production of admit card.

The matter relating to hostel facilities to the research scholars will be decided shortly in the meeting of the Deans of Faculties.

The meeting also decided that the halls of residence will be opened for Pre-final/II Semester students on May 21, 2011.

The Vice Chancellor has requested all the faculty members to render their services for invigilation duty to conduct the admission tests in a peaceful and orderly manner.

AMU Re-Opens after Sine - Die (Official Notice)

ALIGARH May 5: The Aligarh Muslim University will be reopening on May 16, 2011 in a phased manner. The hostel facilities for B. Tech Final year and all final semester students of other faculties will be provided from May 16, 2011 while the examinations for these students will commence from May 18, 2011.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the Deans of faculties and Principals of Colleges chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis.

The meeting noted with appreciation that classes have been completed in all faculties except Faculty of Medicine and there has been no tuitional loss due to sine die declared on April 30, 2011.

The meeting also decided that postgraduate degree and diploma exmainatons in the Faculty of Medicine will be held as per the schedule already announced.

The University has decided that the halls of residence will be opened for Prefinal/ II Semester on May 21, 2011 and the examination will start from May 23, 2011. For all other courses hostel facilities will be provided on May 23, 2011 and examinations will start from May 25, 2011.

It was decided that the departmental admission tests schedule already announced will be strictly adhered to.

The University has also decided that the class IX Entrance Test will be held on May 25, 2011.

It was also resolved that Deans of concerned faculties will submit the complete examination schedule for their faculties so that it can be notified on the University website.

The Principal, University Polytechnic informed that the I Year theory papers are over in Polytechnic. However, practical examinations are left. He proposed that these practical exams be held in the month of July 2011 to avoid inconvenience to the students.

It was also noted that the second semester in the Faculty of Management Studies and Research and Faculty of Commerce examinations will be held in the month of July 2011 as these students have currently gone on practical training.

ALIGARH December 15: The University Extension Lecture, Aligarh Muslim University organized an Interactive Session for the research scholars of the University with Dr. Nabiha Yousuf, Assistant Professor, Dermatology, University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA at the Centre of Excellence in Material Science (Nanomaterials), department of Applied Physics, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU.

Dr. Nabiha urged the students to clear GRE and TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) if they wished to go to USA for higher studies. She stressed there should be a GRE Coaching in AMU. However, she stressed that students might pursue PhD in Aligarh Muslim University as the quality of research being carried away here is quite high and at par with international standard. She said that interested students could have a detail of institutions offering research at www.gradschools.com.

Dr. Nabiha exhorted the students to pursue research in interdisciplinary areas such as health sector, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Optometry, Biomedical Engineering and Nanotoxicology.

Earlier, Professor Alim Husain Naqvi, Coordinator, Centre of Excellence in Material Science (Nanomaterials) welcomed the guest and introduced her to the audience. He said Dr. Nabiha Yousuf is an alumnus of the Aligarh Muslim University. She did PhD from Department of Biochemistry, JNMC in 1999.

International Conference on "Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Environment" at AMU

ALIGARH, November 4: An International Conference on "Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Environment" was organized by Department of Civil Engineering in collaboration with La Sierra University, USA and Asia Pacific University, Thailand and Co-sponsored by All India Council for Technical Education and the Ministry of Water Resources, New Delhi.

This is the second time that the international conference was organized by the department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University in continuation with the first international conference organized in 2009. About 200 full-length papers and abstracts were received for the conference.

The conference encompassed themes varying from Sustainability, Water Pollution Control Wastewater Treatment, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, Bioremediation, Wetlands, Air Pollution and Control, Noise Pollution and Control, Environment Impact Assessment, Sustainable Environment Bio-fuels Modeling Approaches in Environmental Engineering, Role of GIS in Environmental Engineering, Life Cycle Analysis, Energy Efficiency Green Engineering, Alternative Energy Technologies and C02 Capture to Sequestration.

About 250 national and international delegates attended the conference. Delegates from USA, Canada, France, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Iran, Saudi Arabia and almost all the I.I.Ts', N.I.T's and other research and academic institutes of repute participated in the conference and presented their papers. Thirteen technical sessions consisting of oral and poster presentations were conducted during the two days of conference. The research papers were presented in two parallel oral sessions and one poster session.

The inaugural function was presided over by Prof. S.M.A. Rizvi, Dean Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. Razaullah Khan, Organizing Secretary, Dr. I. H. Farooqi, Prof. Ashok Kumar, University of Toledo, USA, Prof. John Perumal, University of La Sierriea, USA, Prof. Ekram Husain, Principal Z. H. College of Engineering & Technology and Prof. Pervez Mustajab, Controller of Examination, AMU spoke on different aspects of environmental engineering. The program was conducted by Mr. Arshad Hussain, University Polytechnic. The proceedings of the conference were also released by the chief guest on this occasion.

Three-day national seminar on Spiritual Psychology organized at AMU

ALIGARH, November 2: The three-day national seminar on Spiritual Psychology organized by the Department of Psychology, Aligarh Muslim University concluded recently. Prof. Sangeetha Menon, Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore was the chief guest. The concluding session was chaired by Prof. Hamida Ahmad, Chairperson, Department of Psychology.


Prof. Sangeetha Menon presented her address on Brain Studies, Consciousness and Spiritual Psychology. Prof. Menon started with the postulate that brain is the most important part of the human body that is the center for sensation, emotion and consciousness and the single unit of information and experience that connects sensation, emotions and consciousness is said to be the ‘self’. Prof. Menon said that self is constantly emerging as a result of its interaction with nature outside (social/biological) and the nature inside (mind). In the process of change the self has the capacity to change the neuro-chemicals of the brain.


Prof. Menon further said that spirituality can be seen as a voyage to the unknown space but here the exploration is of the inside space. A person who cannot understand the inner space can never correctly understand the outer space, she concluded.



Prof. Hamida Ahmad, while delivering the presidential address, expressed happiness over the successful completion of the seminar and highlighted the fact that psychology, while retaining the scientific methods, has to evolve alternative methods to explore the positive and humane side of human psyche.


Prof. Saeeduzzafar, Convener of the Seminar presented the detailed report of the scientific sessions. Prof. Akbar Husain, Organizing Secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

Concluding session of the two Subject Refresher Courses at AMU

ALIGARH, November 3: While presenting presidential remarks at the concluding session of the two Subject Refresher Courses organized by UGC Academic Staff College, the distinguished academician and Professor Emeritus, Professor Irfan Habib, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh urged the course participants to be particular about the course contents. He emphasized the impact of education and syllabus in shaping the young minds and cited his own example how he was fed on nationalistic and patriotic course contents at the AMU school in 1940s. He congratulated the participants on completing the Refresher Courses in Women’s Studies and English.

Professor A.R. Kidwai, Director, UGC Academic Staff College, Aligarh Muslim University exhorted the course participants to articulate and transmit the message of co-existence and national integration as embodied in the Aligarh Muslim University. Aligarh, Oct 27 (PTI) :AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has assured a delegation of AMU students that he will soon take up the issue of revival of their union with HRD minister Kapil Sibal. The assurance was given by Gandhi when the delegation met him yesterday to apprise him of its demand for restoration of the students' union among other issues. "Rahul has assured us that he will be taking up our matter for the revival of the AMU students' union with the HRD Minister very shortly," students' spokesman Mushtaq Ahmed said today. Protesting students are on relay hunger strike for about a fortnight now and have, for the past six days, squatted outside the Vice-Chancellor's residence, who has been confined to a government guest house. The students are also demanding removal of some top University officials responsible for rusticating some 150 students who had raised their voice against the administration. Meanwhile, in a statement, AMU Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Azis urged the agitating students to withdraw the dharna and said the AMU Students Union will be restored by January 26, 2011.

Workshop on issues related to the translation of social sciences and natural sciences from English into Urdu organized by the Centre for Distance Education

ALIGARH, October 26: The inaugural session of the Workshop on issues related to the translation of social sciences and natural sciences from English into Urdu organized by the Centre for Distance Education, Aligarh Muslim University was held in the Conference Hall of Administrative Block. The six-day Workshop is organized in collaboration with National Translation Mission (NTM), which is a part of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore.

Dr. Md. Rizwan Khan, Director, Centre for Distance Education and Coordinator of the Workshop welcomed the guests and eminent scholars from different fields. He highlighted the significance of the training in translation studies/process/technique at Center for Distance Education (CDE) as it has an elaborate system of translating study materials for the students into Urdu and Hindi. Dr. Khan informed that nearly 50 books have been translated by the CDE and various subjects are yet to be translated. The workshop on translation will help the translators at AMU in specializing and updating their skills. He stressed on the need to organize more such programmes in order to facilitate the nation by providing Urdu experts from more than 100 departments at AMU for translation and other related activities.

The Workshop was inaugurated by Professor S. Z. Chaghtai, an eminent scholar of Physics who has earned a name in the field of languages as well. Prof. Chagtai emphasized the significance of the topic of the Workshop in today’s scenario. He highlighted the fact that involvement of technical terms in the process of translation of scientific texts becomes a big challenge. He suggested that a translator has to deal with these issues linguistically as well as socially and at times the translators need to coin their own terms/words in target language.


The Coordinator of the Workshop from National Translation Mission, CIIL, Mysore addressed the audience and informed elaborately about the activities of CIIL and NTM. The CIIL is an advisory body of the Government of India that helps in formulating policies and planning for the development of Indian languages. National Translation Mission has been working at documenting and researching the issues in translation of Indian languages.


Prof. Akhtar Siddiqui, Chairman, National Commission for Teacher’s Education, New Delhi was present as the Chief Guest of the inaugural session. Prof. Siddiqui took up the issue of quality in translation of English text into Urdu language. Citing various examples he reiterated the need to provide training as well as regular exposure to those who translate the knowledge text from various social sciences and natural sciences. Professor Siddiqui mentioned that a translator must have full knowledge of source language as well as target language besides the knowledge of the discipline which he is working in. He also mentioned that Urdu translators are found wanting in this competence therefore such workshops will motivate the translators to acquire the much needed skills and technique.



Prof. Kunju, Visiting Professor at AMU also addressed on this occasion. Prof. Kunju spoke on the significance of Indian languages as the medium of instruction in Indian schools and colleges. He recalled Sir Syed Ahamd Khan’s visionary approach towards using Urdu as a language of instruction for sciences and social sciences.



Finally, the Chief Guest inaugurated the official website of Center for Distance Education. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. S. K. Ehteshamuddin Ahmad. The session was conducted by Dr. Asiya Chowdhary.

Dr. M. Rizwan Khan said that 50 participants from various departments of science and social science will be participating in the Workshop.

Innovations in Public Service Delivery in India, A Lecture by Mr. Sudipto Sengupta at AMU

ALIGARH October 25: The Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University launched a Lecture Series as part of its academic activity. The Inaugural lecture, held at the Arts Faculty Lounge, was delivered by Mr. Sudipto Sengupta, a Senior Consultant of a London based prestigious organisation, the Adam Smith International (New Delhi office); on the topic, “Innovations in Public Service Delivery in India”. The lecture was attended by faculty members and an overwhelming number of students and research scholars from various departments.

While paying tributes to the four great educationists of India, i.e. Sir Syed Ahmed khan, Madan Mohan Malviya, Rabindra Nath Tagore and Dr. Zakir Hussain – the founders of AMU, BHU, Shantineketan and Jamia Millia Islamia respectively, he elaborated on the need and importance of innovations in the public sector. He cited some very good examples of innovations that have led to substantial changes in various Indian states on the initiative of different bureaucrats and individuals.



Mr. Gupta highlighted the innovative steps taken by them in the field of primary education that has revolutionised the education system in Tamil Nadu and other states where the focus has now shifted from mere teaching to the quantum of learning process of each and every individual student. He also highlighted the commendable efforts made in the field of medicine, where the officer-in-charge circulated an order in his area to the medical practitioners to prescribe only generic medicines. He cited a successful innovative experiment in Gujarat which was later adopted in Mizoram about growing green vegetables in Anganvadis under the ICDS scheme for the free distribution to the children of age group 0-5. He also highlighted the new measures of community policing in Kerala. Many of these efforts were duly awarded by the Prime Minister.


He suggested that AMU should initiate the process of establishing a Centre for Innovations besides starting courses and undertaking doctoral research on Innovations in Public Delivery System in India.

The programme was presided over by the Prof. A. R. Vijapur, Chairman, Department of Political Science and Prof. Mirza Asmer Beg conducted the programme. An interactive session with the students was also held at the end.

delegates from outside along with the students and staff of AMU Institute of

A lecture on Diabetic Retinopathy was delivered by Dr. Ajay Arora, who was

associated with Institute as faculty member between 1989 to 1997. An

informal meeting and cultural events like jokes and poems were also

organized and the participants shared their past experience at the

Institute. The most interesting programme was a skit presented by

postgraduate students of Institute of Ophthalmology which was appreciated by

all delegates.



It was decided to organize the meeting of the association on regular basis.


The Director of Institute of Ophthalmology, Prof. R. R. Sukul was elected as


the coordinator of the Association for next two years.

A grant of Rs. 5.5 Lakh from the Blind Association of India for Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged, Aligarh Muslim University

ALIGARH October 18: Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged, Aligarh Muslim University will get a grant of Rs. 5.5 Lakh from the Blind Association of India, this was announced by Mr. Santosh Kumar Rungta while participating in the Sir Syed Day Dinner as a Chief Guest at the Blind School.

All Halls of Residence, non-resident centres and schools organized the traditional community dinner and the students displayed a strong sense of discipline and dedication to the memory of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of the University. All the halls of residence buildings were aesthetically lit up and the speakers highlighted the invaluable contribution of Sir Syed to various hues of life.

Sports Authority of India sanctions Rs. 3 Crore 90 Lakh for Hockey Astro Turf at AMU

ALIGARH October 13: The Sports Authority of India has informed the Aligarh

Muslim University as well as the CPWD (Agra) that a sum of Rs: 3 Crore and

90 Lakh has been sanctioned for Hockey Astro Turf in the Governing Body

meeting of the Sports Authority of India recently. The CPWD has been asked

to take necessary action in this matter.

The Secretary, Games Committee, Prof. Tariq Mansoor has expressed happiness

over this matter and hoped that the laying of Hockey Astro Turf will go a

long way in revival of Hockey at AMU and restoration of its glory in this

field. Prof. Mansoor said that after the Astro Turf is laid, AMU will become

the centre for Hockey Activities in Western UP.

Thirty students of AMU have been offered job in HCL technologies

ALIGARH October 11: Thirty students of AMU have been offered job in HCL


technologies. This was the outcome of the Central Campus Placement drive

initiated by Prof. P.K. Abul Azis, Vice Chancellor, AMU. The Campus

interviews were held on 5th October, 2010 in which 300 students of AMU

participated. Most of these students are pursuing final year of graduation.

Out of the total selections, 17 students belonged to Commerce stream. Mr.

Ritesh Shirolla who represented HCL for Campus Selection desired that

another similar event may be organized so that more students can get an

opportunity to work in HCL, a leading IT company of India.



This effort was one step towards realizing the long cherished dream of Prof.

P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor to establish a central placement cell in

AMU. He had entrusted the responsibility to organizing this event to Faculty

of Management studies and Research, AMU.



The event was made possible due to active participation and support of Prof.

Ainul Haque Khan, DSW, Prof. Javaid Akhtar, Dean, FMSR and Prof. Parvaiz

Talib, Faculty Coordinator of this event. Mr. Shad A. Khan, Student

Coordinator (Faculty of Management) along-with his committed team of

Volunteers of students belonging to Management Faculty as also other

concerned faculties worked overnight to make this event possible.



Mr. Saad Hameed, Career Counselor was actively involved in the event. Apart

from introducing HCL Technologies to AMU, he arranged 4 days long training

also for students to ensure their selection in jobs.



The event was organized in the newly spruced up cultural Hall of Maulana

Azad Library. The representative of recruitment team described the

arrangement of Prof. Shabahat Hussain, Officiating Librarian, Maulana Azad

Library and his team at the venue as 'grandiose'.



Members of recruitment desired that students who could not get selected may

improve their communications skills so that they may get selected in 2nd

round of screening. Other organizations like IBM Daksh, Genpect, Convergis

etc have also expressed desire to visit AMU for Campus selection.

ALIGARH: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students on Tuesday staged an indefinite dharna demanding removal of some top university officials who they allege were "crushing" their democratic rights.




The students numbering around one hundred have threatened to turn the dharna into an indefinite hunger strike if their demands were not meet within the next twenty-four hours



The students, who are protesting in front of Vice- Chancellor Lodge, are also demanding restoration of the AMU Students Union which has been lying defunct since the past several years.



They demanded removal of some top university officials who were allegedly "masterminding in terrorising and crushing democratic rights" of AMU students whenever voices are raised against intimidating tactics of university authorities.



Several students have been expelled and barred from the campus since the past few months, they claimed.



When contacted, AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said "The University is ready to discuss all genuine demands of the protesters provided they are raised in a peaceful manner."

ALIGARH October 2: The Officiating Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan today inaugurated a three-day exhibition of books and photographs on Mahatma Gandhi at the Maulana Azad Library. A large number of letters written by Mahatma Gandhi to the students and other AMU alumni freedom fighters are also put on display at the exhibition.



Delivering the presidential address at the Commemoration Meeting, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan said that the world has to realize that it is the need of hour to implement Gandhian values to achieve peace and prosperity. He further emphasized that we have to shun violence and violent means to achieve our goals and follow the path of ahimsa as shown to us by the Father of the Nation. He was the man whose teachings transcend times, borders, races and religions and it is the moral duty of every Indian to keep the spirit alive.


Prof. Hasan said that Mahatma Gandhi is the one of the greatest leaders that the world has ever seen. His unending belief in non-violence helped India achieve freedom from British rule by humbling British empire with the power of ahimsa. It was the impact of Mahatma Gandhi’s observance that United Nation had to unanimously declare October 2 as International Non-violence Day.



Prof. Hasan observed that Mahatma Gandhi was always in favour of communal harmony and he wanted the people to understand that religious unity can only be brought about if it is based on equal respect for all religions. Such a mindset will not only remove the discord among the various groups but also lead to the realization of the fact that religion is in fact a stabilizing force and not a disruptive one.



Professor Emeritus Irfan Habib devoted his speech to what he called Gandhi Ji’s finest last six months of his life highlighting the way he stood up alone against the current and ultimately gave up his life in the struggle against inter-communal slaughter. Prof. Habib felt it is the day that the country should express its sense of gratitude to the unique great man.


Prof. Qazi Afzal Husain, Dean, Faculty of Arts spoke on the thought process of Gandhi Ji and said that Gandhi Jayanti should be celebrated as International Peace and International Justice Day as well.


AMU Registrar, Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel highlighted the role of Gandhi Ji against untouchability that prevailed in Indian society on the basis of caste and religion and said that Aligarh Muslim University has been celebrating the Gandhi Jayanti with great fervor and zeal.


Mr. Mohammad Naiyer Rahman, a student of M. Com and Ms. Sumaiyah Naaz, student of BA Final also expressed their views on the occasion. At the end of the programme the officiating Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hasan administered an oath to the audience.

Management of Traumatic Dental Injuries workshop at Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Dr. Z.A. Dental College, AMU

ALIGARH, September 23: Prof. Anil Chandra, an eminent speaker from C.S.M.M.U. (K.G.M.C.), Lucknow delivered an extension lecture on management of traumatic dental injuries at a workshop conducted by the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Dr. Z.A. Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University. Prof. Anil Chandra said that the fracture of tooth, especially the front teeth has psychological effect on patients and should be treated immediately. The incidence of fracture of front teeth has increased manifold due to roadside accidents, especially in the youths. He discussed several latest and quick techniques of treatment of front teeth fracture. Prof. Chandra gave live demonstration to all postgraduate students of the department.

Prof. S.H. Hashmi, Principal, Dr. Z.A. Dental College welcomed the guest. Prof. R.K. Tewari, Chairman, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and Organizer of Extension Lecture and Workshop proposed vote of thanks.

Earlier, Dr. Huma Iftekhar, a P.G. student introduced the guest speaker and highlighted his achievements in the conservative dentistry.

ALIGARH, September 21: Human Rights activist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, AMU, Dr. Muhibul Haq said that terrorism has become biggest danger to peace and humanity in the world. He said that United Nation should make sincere efforts to wipe out the menace and must impose ban on the countries which are violating human rights. He was delivering a Lecture on Terrorism and Violence: In the Light of Human Rights organized by Law Society of the Faculty of Law. He drew the attention towards the fact that winning war on terrorism is not easy. He cited examples of Iraq and Afghanistan and said that many innocent people were killed in the name of war on terrorism.




Incharge of the Law Society Dr. Shakeel Samdani said that the countries and organizations which are violating human rights presently are those who have received teachings on human rights late. Islam introduced the world with human rights 1400 years back. It taught human beings to treat other humans in a humanly way and called human race as Ashraf-ul-Makhlukhat whereas America and Western countries have given importance to it only in 20th century. He warned that if United Nations did not pay due attention immediately then people will lost trust in it.



During the seminar large number of students questioned the speakers. Some students like Mohd. Khurram, Sidharth Gautam, Waseem Ahmad Shah, Arif Yasin Jouder, Tanvir Ahmad and Ms. Romana particularly grilled the speakers.

ToT Program at the Department of Pediatrics, JNMCH, AMU, Aligarh

ALIGARH September 17: The Department of Pediatrics, J. N, Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a ten day State ToT (Training of Trainers) of Comprehensive Child Survival program (CCSP). The training was inaugurated jointly by Dr. S. P. Singh Lohta, Additional Director, Health and Family Welfare, Aligarh Division and Dr. U. K. Gupta, Chief Medical Officer, Aligarh.

Prof. S. Manazir Ali, Chairman Department of Pediatrics, JNMC explained the importance of Comprehensive Child Survival Program training resource centre. CCSP is a program based on WHO and UNICEF’s IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses) protocol, with an additional component of neonatal health. The grim situation of Uttar Pradesh in terms of infant and Child mortality was also discussed by Dr. Ali.

Dr. Manazir observed that about 105 lakh children die under age of five years every year in the world. This means more than 29000 every day, more than 1200 children every hour and more than 20 children under age of five years die every minute at a rate of one child dying every 3 second. In India 22 Lakh children die under age of five years every year in India. This means more than 6000 every day, more than 250 children every hour and more than four children under age of five years die every minute at a rate of one child every 15 second.

Dr. Ali said that malnutrition is more common in India than in Sub-Saharan Africa. One in every three malnourished children in the world lives in India. Close to 50 per cent of Under 5 deaths occur in the first month and of the first month deaths, 2/3 of them occur during the first seven days of birth in India. Majority of the children die at home but have history of contacting health personnel once at least.



The CCSP resource centre, established with the help of UNICEF and NRHM, is one of the two facilities in Uttar Pradesh meant for the training of medical officers. Following the training all medical officers will train health officials and paramedical staff in their respective districts.

Kerala High Court removed legal barrier to establish AMU

ALIGARH September 17: A major legal roadblock for establishing AMU Malappuram Center and launching of MBA and BALLB programmes in the current session was removed by the Kerala High Court. The High Court has rejected the prayer of Mr. Janardhanan for interim relief against the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University in Kerala at Perinthalmanna.


The Chief Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice P.N. Ravindran noted that the petitioner has overlooked the language of Section 12(2) of the Act. The Hon’ble High Court of Kerala further observed that the Section 12(2) of the AMU Act reads the University may also, “with the sanction of the Visitor and subject to the statutes and ordinances, establish and maintain such special centers, specialized laboratories or such other institutions for research or instruction as are necessary for the furtherance of its objects either on its own or in co-operation or collaboration with any other institution”.

The writ petition was filed by Mr. K. Janardhanan to “stay all further proceedings of establishment of off campus center of AMU in Kerala and admission to various classes this academic year of Aligarh Muslim University”, Malappuram center at Perinthalmanna pending disposal of the writ petition.

The writ petitioner Mr. Janardhanan claimed to be a public-spirited citizen, practicing lawyer, political activist, educationist, trade unionists, etc. The essence of the grievance of the petitioner was that the first respondent, i.e., AMU took a decision to establish a campus at Malappuram in Kerala and such an establishment is beyond the authority of law confirmed on the university under the Aligarh Muslim University Act.


Regarding the hostel issue, Chief Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice P.N. Ravindran of Kerala High Court were of the opinion that non-availability of a hostel at the initial stages may not by itself be a ground for prohibiting the University from establishing a campus. They further observed that, in view of the pendency of the writ petition (c) No. 15091 of 2010 “We do not propose to make any further in-depth analysis of the writ petition. The above mentioned facts, in our own view, are sufficient to reject the prayer for interim relief. The prayer is accordingly rejected”.

The writ petition argued that the University could establish special centers, special laboratories etc., only within a radius of 25 kilometers of the university mosque in view of the language of the sub-section (9A) of Section 5 of the AMU Act.


Mr. T.P.M. Ibrahim Khan, Assistant Solicitor General of India plead the arguments on behalf of the respondents.


It is to be noted that based on the same plea an old boy of the University Mr. Z.K. Faizan has also filed a writ petition in the Allahabad High Court and the case will come for hearing on 27th of this month.

Extension in the date of submission of nomination for Sir Syed Ahmad Khan International Award 2010

ALIGARH, September 9: In view of the Eid holidays, the last date for submission of nomination form for the Sir Syed Ahmad Khan International Award-2010 in the field of Education has been extended till September 15, 2010.

The prestigious award will carry a cash prize of Rs. 5 Lakh is one of its kind instituted by a University in Asia.

Individuals and institutions engaged in rendering outstanding work in the area of education, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and nationality are eligible for nomination. Last year the award was earmarked for the discipline of Life Sciences and earlier for the discipline of Literature.

The award will be decided by a jury comprising distinguished persons of proven integrity and given at the Sir Syed Day commemoration function to be held on October 17, 2010 at Aligarh Muslim University.
