ALIGARH, November 19: Dr. Moinuddin, Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University was adjudged as Best Research Poster in the category “Non Clinical” at the State Level Bio-Medical Research Competition organized as a part of Academic Centenary Year Celebration of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU), Lucknow.
Dr. Muinuddin was given the award on his research paper titled “Catechol-estrogen modified DNA: A better Antigen for Cancer autoantibody” published in Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics (Journal) in 2007.
The CSMMU, Lucknow organized a State Level Biomedical Research Competition, as part of the Academic Centenary Year Celebrations for the competition inviting faculties from different medical institutions of the State to submit research paper that were published in a peer reviewed journal during the last five year. The organizers selected two papers in each category, viz., Clinical Medicine, Clinical Surgery and Non-Clinical subjects from each participating institution. Dr. Moinuddin’s paper qualified the two evaluation rounds and was finally selected for the award in the ‘non-clinical’ category.
The award certificates were given by Prof. S.K. Sarin, Chairman, Board of Governors, MCI who also declared Gold Medals by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for the award winning Faculty.
Dr. Moinuddin is presently working as Lecturer and has supervised four Ph.Ds and two MD theses. He has also worked in four major projects besides publishing over twenty five research papers in the national as well as international journals. He has attended several national as well as international conferences.

prize of Rs. 2500/each, a memento and a certificate of excellence. Dr. S.
Hasan Tahir, Scientist, California, USA, an alumnus of Chemistry department
sponsored the award and was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The awardees
were – Mr. Md. Saddam Husain Ansari, B.Tech., Mr. Wasiullah, BA, Mr. Md.
Mawoon Khan, MCA, and Mr. Peerzada Raouf Ahmad, BA (Final).
Dr. Tahir urged the faculty toppers to go for even greater heights in future
and continue to work hard. They must always think high.

Three-day International Conference on Contribution of India and Indian Sub-continent in Irani Language and Literature held by the Department of Persian
ALIGARH November 16: The Ambassador of Afghanistan to India, Mr. Samim Hamraz inaugurated three-day International Conference on Contribution of India and Indian Sub-continent in Irani Language and Literature held by the Department of Persian, Aligarh Muslim University.
In his inaugural lecture, Mr. Hamraz while appreciating India’s contribution to Persian language spanning over 800 years underlined the important contributions made by eminent Persian scholars like Prof. Nazeer Ahmad, Prof. Amir Hasan Abidi, Prof. Abdul Wadood Azhar and Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi etc. He said that Embassy of Afghanistan in India will continue its efforts for the development of Persian language.
The Director of Iran Culture House in India, Dr. Ali Dahgai and Cultural and Educational Consultant of Afghanistan, Prof. Abdul Khaliq recalled old relations between India, Afghanistan and Iran.
In his keynote address, Secretary of All India Persian Teacher’s Association, Prof. Abdul Wadood Azhar discussed use of the Persian language in the different departments in Indian. Prof. Qazi Afzal Husain, Dean, Arts Faculty also expressed his views on the issue.
Earlier, Director of Persian Research Center, Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi welcomed the guests. She elaborated on the development and progress of Persian language and literature from Ghaznavi period to present times.
Chairman of the Persian Department, Prof. Mohd. Asif Naim Siddiqui highlighted the aim of the seminar. He also read out presidential address of former Pro-Chancellor Nawab Rahmatullah Khan Sherwani in his absence. The programme was conducted by Dr. Mohd. Usman Ghani.

K.P. Singh Memorial Lecture
ALIGARH November 16: Notwithstanding the constitutional provisions of equality, the Indian state has not done enough to dispel insecurity from the minds of minorities as the most important symbol of the state – police – hardly enjoy the confidence of the Muslims, Christians and Sikhs, regretted Mr. Vibhuti Narain Rai, eminent writer and Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International University, Wardha today.
Delivering first K. P. Singh memorial lecture on “State Response to Communalism”, Mr. Vibhuti Narain Rai, IPS, said that the minorities never consider the police as friend or protector. The police is seen as the oppressor and the police behavior in communal riots bear testimony to the fact. Quoting his well-documented research on the role of police in combating communalism, Mr. V. N. Rai said that the Muslims always suffered heavy loss in terms of lives and properties at the initial stages and subsequently they were killed in police firing and police also arrested more Muslims.
Debunking the myth that the Muslims start riots, Mr. Rai said he sifted through the police records and found that even the first hour of the riots, more Muslims were killed. It proves that it is wrong to say that the Muslims start riot and the police control the situation. He said if the state is firm, no riot could continue more than 24 hours. During the communal strife, police become perpetrator of violence and the state lack the will to curb it.
Tracing the history of communal riots, Mr. Rai said that the assassination of Gandhi put a full stop to riot and no major riot took place till 1961. After that riots occurred in regular intervals of two or three years. The police always behaved in partisan manner and it resulted lack of faith in police that also denotes lack of faith in the state which is very alarming. This calls for serious introspection, he said.
Paying glaring tributes to Professor K. P. Singh, Mr. Rai said that he was an avowed enemy of narrowmindness and communalism.
Recalling K. P. Singh’s contribution to literature, noted Urdu poet Shahryar said that Prof. Singh wanted literature to reflect social consciousness. He also recited a poem in memory of Prof. K. P. Singh.
Delivering the presidential address, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University said that Indian democracy has become more matured and now there is a considerable decrease in communal riots. He paid rich tributes to Prof. K. P. Singh who pledged his mortal remains to the Aligarh Muslim University for the medical students. Prof. Singh’s gesture was unparallel and the university will always remain grateful to him, he concluded.
Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, Registrar of the University extended the vote of thanks. Prof. Imtiaz Hasnain and Dr. Ajay Bisaria also spoke on the occasion.

High Power Committee to enquire into the recent instances of indiscipline rampant among the Junior Doctors and Senior Residents
ALIGARH, November 16: Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh has constituted a High Power Committee to enquire into the recent instances of indiscipline rampant among the Junior Doctors and Senior Residents leading to disruption of Hospital Services of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU.
The Committee will enquire into the incidents of alleged assault by bystanders of patients creating a sense of insecurity among Junior Doctors, Senior Residents and other Hospital Staff, alleged incident of assault of father of the deceased boy master Farman on 13.11.2010 and the forceful confinement of his other relatives by the Junior Doctors and dereliction of duty in promptly handing over the dead body to the father of the boy and the circumstances in which the body was kept for about six hours before it was handed over to the Police. It will also assess the security requirement of the JNMC and suggest measures to provide improved security frame work for the Doctors and the staff to work and Identify the reasons for the outburst of Doctors, Hospital staff, patients and their relatives and suggest remedial actions to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
According to the AMU Registrar, Prof. V.K. Abdul Jaleel, the High Power Committee will consist of Prof. Tajuddin, Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine (Convener), Prof. (Mrs.) Abha Laxmi Singh, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Mahdi Abbas Rizvi, Dean, Faculty or Engineering & Technology, Prof. M. Saleemuddin, Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit, Prof. Ainul Haq Khan, Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof. (Mrs.) Bilqis Naseem Waris, Principal, Women’s College and Prof. Javed Akhtar, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies & Research.
The Vice-Chancellor has directed the Committee to submit its report within one month.

Department of Electrical Engineering granted Rs. 1.13 Crore under the Funds for Improvement of S and T infrastructure scheme
ALIGARH, November 12: The Department of Electrical Engineering, Aligarh
Muslim University has been granted Rs. 1.13 Crore under the FIST (Funds for
Improvement of S & T infrastructure) scheme by the Department of Science and
Technology (DST), Government of India. The grant has been sanctioned to
strengthen the post-graduate teaching and research facilities in the
department.
A proposal prepared by a team of Prof. Mukhtar Ahmad, Prof. Badrul Hasan
Khan and Mr. Mohd. Rihan under the supervision of Prof. Mohibullah,
Chairman, Electrical Engineering Department under this scheme was submitted
by the department in May 2010. After first round scrutiny, the proposal was
selected for a presentation which was delivered by Dr. Yusufuzzaman Khan and
Mr. Mohd. Rihan to an expert committee at Indian Academy of Sciences,
Bangalore. Finally, the Department of Science and Technology sanctioned Rs.
1.13 Crore on the basis of this proposal. The grant will be utilized in
procuring state of the art equipments in the concerned laboratories. It is
expected that these developments will go a long way in further improving the
teaching-learning process and research activities in the department.

ALIGARH, November 10: Dr. Mehtab Ahmad and Dr. M. Azfar Siddiqui, III year students of MD (JR III), Department of Radio-diagnosis, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University got prestigious Dr. O. N. Saxena Best Paper Award and Dr. S. K. Srivastava Best Paper Award respectively for their excellent presentation at the Annual Conference of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA), UP Chapter held recently at Kanpur.

Dr. Mehtab Ahmad presented paper on “prediction of uterus cancer in women with postmenopausal bleeding using colour Doppler” while Dr. Azfar Siddiqui presented paper on “use of umbilical cord abnormality on prediction of abnormalities of the developing babies in the uterus”.
