Seminar organized at the department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine, J. N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a felicitation programme to welcome Dr. Rakesh Kumar Khattar who has been appointed as District Programme Officer, Aligarh under National Rural Health Mission, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.

Prof. Zulfia Khan, Coordinator, Polio Project of AMU welcomed the chief guest Dr. Khattar. She briefed the role of AMU in Polio Eradication Programme and highlighted the problems faced by staff and patients at two UNICEF health clinics at Jeevangarh and Mahfooz Nagar, run by the Department of Community Medicine.

Dr. M. Athar Ansari, Chairman Department of Community Medicine presented the details of various projects and schemes running in the department. He emphasized the role of the department in reducing the community resistance in polio programme and improving the Vit. A coverage not only in Aligarh but also in Lakhimpur and Sitapur districts.

Dr. Sakeena Mushfiq presented an overview of the polio project and its achievements especially the routine immunization coverage in under five children.

Dr. Khattar appreciated the efforts of the department and polio partners and assured maximum possible support to sustain the ongoing activities at two health clinics and in other National Health Programmes under NRHM. Prof. M. M. Ashhar, Coordinator, NSS, Dr. M. Tahir, Department of Sociology and Social Work and Coordinator Social Mobilization by MSW students, Mr. Shafiq Ahmad, DUC, UNICEF, Dr. A. R. Siddiqui, Dr. Anees Ahmad, Mr. Tauseef Ahmad ad Mr. Mohsin were present during the programme.

A team of twenty-one students of the University of North Carolina (USA) met the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis at his residence.

These students are on a study tour where they learn Hindi Urdu languages and Indian history and culture.

The group of students of University of North Carolina is headed by Dr. Afroz Taj, Associate Professor of South Asian Languages and Literatures.

Dr. John Coldwell of the University of the University of North Carolina said that his University is interested to establish collaborative relations between the two institutions to promote friendship and to cooperate in a mutually beneficial association.

On this occasion, AMU Registrar, prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, Controller, Prof. Pervez Mustajab, Finance Officer, Mrs. Yasmin Jalal, Proctor, Prof. M. NEW DELHI: An Aligarh Muslim University student, Md. Adil Hossain, has alleged that he has been placed under suspension for speaking out against the university' stand on the issue of homosexuality and for using the RTI Act to seek information against what he alleged “financial bungling at AMU”.

A student of M.A. (Previous) Mass Communication, Adil has alleged that he has been penalised for criticising the suspension of Dr. Siras for his alleged homosexual orientation and his subsequent death. The student has alleged that the university has punished him for speaking about Dr. Siras's suspension in the media and on his blog.

“Probably I am the first student in the entire country to face suspension from any educational institution for criticising the present administration on account of financial bungling as proved in the Principal Accountant General's Report on the Internet as mentioned in the suspension order,” Adil alleged.

“I am also being victimised by the AMU administration as I openly lashed out against them during the controversy surrounding Dr. Siras. I am also the only student who spoke out against the Local Intelligence Unit, the official spy agency of AMU, which snoops on its students and teachers …I have filed numerous RTI application on the LIU and financial bungling at AMU and I think I am also being targeted for that,” Adil has alleged in his letter.

However, AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said Adil has been suspended for various incidents of indiscipline including blocking the road and protesting against a power cut caused by a storm. “There was a storm and the university's power supply was disrupted. He instigated other students to stage a protest, even though there was no electricity in the entire area because of the storm.”

‘Defamatory remarks'

The spokesperson said Adil also made defamatory remarks against the university when a student lost his life while trying to cross a railway track. University officials said a detailed inquiry will be conducted and Adil will be asked to appear before the committee conducting the inquiry.

Centre for Promotion of Science at AMU organized a Refresher Course in Science Subjects

ALIGARH June 2:* The Centre for Promotion of Science, Aligarh Muslim
University successfully organized a Refresher Course in Science Subjects
(PCB) for teachers from Muslim Managed Educational Institutions and an
Introductory Science Course for teachers from Deeni Madaris.

Prof. Rashid Hayat Siddiqui, Department of Civil Engineering and Prof. A.N.K
Yusufi, former Chairman, Department of Biochemistry gave away the
certificate of participation and gift books to the participants. A total
number of 36 participants (20 in Refresher Course and 16 in Introductory
Science Course) were felicitated at the valedictory programme.

Earlier Prof. Naheed Banu, Director, Centre for Promotion of Science
welcomed the guests and presented an introduction of the Centre. Prof. Banu
also paid rich tributes to the founding Director of the Centre Late Prof.
Asrar Ahmad. Dr. Hisamuddin conducted the programme.

The participants found the courses very useful and relevant and expressed
desire to participate in the similar courses organized by the Centre in
future.

Mir Wilayat Husain Gold Medal for BDS Toppers

ALIGARH June 2:* BDS topper Saba Khan of 2009 batch and BDS topper Nida
Siddiqui of 2008 batch of Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, Aligarh Muslim
University has been selected for the award of Mir Wilayat Husain Gold Medal.
The decision was taken in a meeting of Mir Wilayat Husain Education Trust
Fund Committee chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University
Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis.

The committee has also decided to award Mir Wilayat Husain scholarship to
the topper of BDS Entrance Test, Danish Suhail, topper of BDS First Prof
(2008 batch), Shazli Aslam, topper of BDS Second Prof (2007 batch), Hina
Javed and topper of BDS Third Prof (2006 batch), Huda Husain of 2009-10
academic session.

Similarly the topper of BDS Entrance Test, Dhiraj Kumar Singh, topper of BDS
First Prof (2007 batch), Bhumika Kapoor, topper of BDS Second Prof (2006
batch), Huda Husain and topper of BDS Third Prof (2005 batch), Saba Khan
were also awarded Mir Wilayat Husian scholarship for the academic session
2008-09.

Mother of Khwaja Haleem and Khwaja Shahid died at J. N. Medical College

ALIGARH June 1: Mrs. Ayesha Bano, mother of senior leader and former Minister of UP, Mr. Khwaja Haleem and President of AMU Old Boys’ Association, Delhi, Mr. M. Khwaja Shahid died at J. N. Medical College today. She was 86. Mrs. Ayesha was suffering from cancer.

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis met the bereaved family and paid condolences on the sad demise of Mrs. Bano. Prof. Azis prayed for peace to the departed soul and courage to the family members to bear the sorrow.
