ALIGARH, October 29: Prof. K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chairman, Indian Council of Philosophical Research and President, Asian Congress of Philosophy while inaugurating the National Seminar on Spiritual Psychology organized by the Department of Psychology, Aligarh Muslim University, differentiated religiosity from spirituality and pointed out that spirituality can be considered as a process. He said that the spirituality and science should not be seen as antithetical to each other but both the approaches can offset each other’s limitation for providing a holistic understanding of human being. According to Prof. Rao the biggest predicament of today is difference in belief system and practice.

The Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis while delivering presidential address, congratulated the Department and organizers for taking up a challenging area for research and wished all the success.

Prof. Akbar said that the keynote and valedictory addresses, invited lectures and papers presented in the Seminar would feature leading-edge research, as well as applications of spiritual psychology in a variety of fields ranging from health to business, education to assessment and healing to psychotherapy. The Chairperson, Department of Psychology, Prof. (Mrs.) Hamida Ahmad presenting an introduction of the theme of the Seminar, said that spiritual psychology is an area which is of central importance in the contemporary scenario because social scientists need to touch upon issues which help to bring humanity under an umbrella of common goals and bonds. Kapil Sibal's Effigy burnt in support of the Ongoing agitation

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Student-agitation-continues-in-AMU-Sibals-effigy-burnt/articleshow/6804521.cms

ALIGARH: The ongoing student agitation at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for the revival of student union continues unabated here.

Angry students burnt an effigy of Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal last evening for not responding to respond to their plea.

They raised slogans against Sibal, accusing him of "protecting the AMU Vice-Chancellor who faces serious charges of financial bungling and is crushing the democratic rights of students to raise their voice against corrupt practices."

"We fail to understand what message the HRD Minister wishes to send to the youth of the country by his handling of the AMU affairs," spokesman of the agitating students, Mushtaq Ahmad told PTI.

The ongoing inquiry against the Vice-Chancellor and some senior university officials had been "deliberately put into cold-storage" for more than eighteen months now because some senior HRD officials were determined to put a lid on large scale financial bungling at the AMU, student leaders said.

Senior administrative officials yesterday persuaded the protestors to allow medical help to a student whose condition deteriorated after going on a hunger strike for the past six days.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Waseem Ahmad today met the students asked them to show restraint and not fall prey to the designs of any political party.

"It would be improper to rush to any conclusion regarding the HRD Minister as he has assured us this morning that he has an open mind on the AMU crisis and will consider all genuine demands of the students," he said.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/AMU-V-C-asks-protesting-students-to-focus-on-development/701723/

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration has termed the ongoing agitation for restoration of students’ union on campus a threat to the healthy functioning of the university.

According to AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof P K Abdul Azis, the ongoing agitation is an attempt to takeover the functioning of the university by force. The university cannot sustain academic excellence in absence of discipline, he said.

On Saturday, V-C appealed the students and the academic staff to allow the university function normally and asked them to cooperate and focus on development initiatives.

More than 150 agitating students have been holding a dharna in front of the V-C’s house since October 4. They blocked the entrance to V-C’s residence in the early hours of Friday. The V-C was moved from his official residence on the campus to a government guesthouse at midnight. However, the students are still on dharna outside V-C’s residence.

Protesting students are on relay hunger strike for about a fortnight now and have, for the past six days, squatted outside the Vice-Chancellor's residence, who has been confined to a government guest house. The students are also demanding removal of some top University officials responsible for rusticating some 150 students who had raised their voice against the administration. Meanwhile, in a statement, AMU Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Azis urged the agitating students to withdraw the dharna and said the AMU Students Union will be restored by January 26, 2011.

Press Note by the Vice-Chancellor: Student's Union to be restored by 26th January, 2011

ALIGARH October 26: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis today expressed his great indignation at the way political leaders and workers are visiting the AMU vitiating the academic environment in the University campus.

He appreciated that the student community of AMU for understanding the situation and for remaining focused in their studies. He urged that they should also ask the agitating students to withdraw their dharna.

An Urge by the Teacher's Community: Let the VC enter his lodge:

ALIGARH, October 26: More than a dozen teachers of Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University, in a letter written to District Magistrate, Aligarh, appealed to take necessary steps facilitating the safe return of the AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis to his lodge as well as to his workplace, so that he may perform his duties peacefully and effectively.

The signatories of the letter said that the AMU Vice-Chancellor has been wrongfully restrained to enter into his lodge by a group of students staging Dharna in front of his lodge, as a result of which he is staying at the Exhibition Guest House out of campus on the advice of the district administration, which is humiliating to him and to the AMU academic community also. This wrongful restraint is the violation of his personal liberty and basic freedom which any citizen of India enjoys on the strength of his fundamental rights. The letter urged the district administration to secure the Vice Chancellor his official residence and ensure that he discharges his official obligations without any hindrances.

Aligarh: The condition of one of the students on hunger strike for the past six days outside the Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor's residence demanding revival of the students' union deteriorated on Saturday, official sources said.

The sources said the authorities have alerted the Centre about the fragile peace on the campus.

With the student protesters squatting outside the gate of his residence, Vice-Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis has been confined to a government guest house outside the University campus for more than 48 hours. The students have been holding protests for more than three weeks now and despite an attempt on Friday night by top district officials, Prof. Azis turned down the students' demand for reviving the union which has been lying defunct for more than four years now.

Agitating students' spokesman Mushtaq Ahmed told PTI: “We have written several letters to the Union HRD Minister and two letters to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi highlighting that all we are seeking is the restoration of our basic democratic rights. Not only has the students' union been shut down but students' representation to the two main statutory bodies, the Academic Council and the University Court, has also been stopped. It is sad that neither Rahul Gandhi nor the HRD Minister has replied to us.” - PTI

An article in The Hindu

http://hindu.com/2010/10/22/stories/2010102258540400.htm

NEW DELHI: A Right to Information application filed by a former Aligarh Muslim University professor in the Botany Department has revealed that the university is spending large sums of money in payments to the enquiry committee constituted to undertake the Presidential inquiry into alleged financial irregularities by Vice-Chancellor Abdul P.K. Azis.

Prof. Ziauddin Ahmad, who filed the RTI in August, said: “In excess of Rs. 43 lakh has been spent till September 15 to take care of the expenses of the two-member inquiry committee though the actual inquiry proceedings are yet to begin.”

The meetings of the inquiry committee so far have only established the modalities and the framework of the inquiry while the actual examination of evidence will take place from October 23 to 26.

The two-member committee which consists of Justice B.A. Khan and Justice Devicha was constituted in April and is the second committee to be constituted to inquire into alleged financial irregularities of the V-C. The first committee was constituted in July 2009 and dissolved in September 2009 after differences arose among its members.

“It should not have taken so long to appoint a second committee after the old one had ben dissolved. The second committee was to submitt its report two months after its constitution. It is yet to be known when the committee will come out with its findings and they are taking home a hefty salary each month,” Prof. Ahmad said.

The expenditure of over Rs. 43 lakh was incurred under heads such as payments of salaries and perks to the judges, legal expenses paid to advocate Eijaz Maqbool, committee office rent and salary for office staff, travel expenses and petty expenditure.

According to Prof. Ahmad “Mr. Eijaz Maqbool, the appointed advocate, is also the university representative. However, the inquiry is against Prof. Azis and not the university. Hence Mr. Maqbool need not have been appointed. Yet he has been appointed and he will represent the V-C who should hire and pay for iis own lawyer.”

“Further, when inquiry proceedings are instituted against an official, the usual practice is either suspension or to send the person on leave. In this case the V-C has been allowed to retain his position questioning the fairness of enquiry proceedings,” Mr. Ahmad added.

They placed the utensils in front of the gate of the Vice Chancellor's lodge, where some students are on indefinite hunger strike since October 5.

The students are demanding restoration of their union, which was dissolved in 2007, and the removal of senior University officials whom they blame for rusticating more than 150 students during the past three years.

Spokesman of the student protesters, Mushtaq Ahmad, told mediapersons that they are holding such peaceful protest to express solidarity with those students who are on an indefinite hunger strike.

Objectives of a Students’ Union/ Movement

A student union is both associational and institutional interest group like trade unions. All liberal democracies have such organized groups to represent the collective interests of the concerned groups of citizens, in this case, the students. Since democracy is a system of government by discussion, persuasion, accommodation and consensus, hence, such pressure groups like students’ union have to be militant in ideas and mobilizations. They have to organize gheraos, dharnas, and public demonstrations in protest against the policies and actions that are antithetical to the larger collective interests of the student community. They have to play important roles in national reconstruction.[Rahul Gandhi is too fascinated with youth, and their politics]

They have to build enlightened public opinion, by promoting consensus, by enlisting sympathy, support and participation by a cross section of opinion leaders in a society and appealing to human reason, good sense and compassion. They have to influence the decision making. The state and its organ like university (administration) along with the Students’ Union have to encourage flow of ideas, promote public debate and discussion, and ensure students’ participation in policy formulation and in running the affairs of the university.

The Students’ Union has also to provide meaningful information, critical perspectives and theoretical reflection on various issues. It has to analyze the socio-economic problems that we confront at various levels.

In short, since a students’ union does not have executive power, therefore, to ensure the protection of collective interests of the student community, it has to employ pressure tactics through democratic mobilizations. A student leader, rather than becoming a self-serving, opportunist political operator, should not only be enlightened, informed, visionary, and sensitive but s/he should also be equipped with the art of mobilizations and negotiations.
Thus

Student movements are a unique part of the culture of higher education. One of the fundamental elements of the university community, students has a genuine stake or vested interest in the operations of the university and the impact higher education can have on the world outside the walls of the academy, says Philip Altbach. The students who attended the first International Congress of Students in Latin America in 1909 had a direct impact on the University of Cordoba in 1918 and, ultimately, the very structure of Latin American higher education. In the United States, students brought the attention of their nation and that of the world to the futility of American involvement in a foreign conflict and forced their own universities to account for their business practices.

The Indian Scenario

Although potentially compromised by the true leaders of the Independence movement, Indian students were a key component to their country’s independence from British rule in 1947, and went on to represent a microcosm of a world embroiled in Cold War.

Students, including educated unemployed youth, have become an important demand group in post-independence Indian politics. Students have been in the vanguard of regime change. Students’ political participation and mobilization in India is referred as ‘unrest’, ‘indiscipline’ [in AMU’s official/Proctorial parlance it is identified as “anti social activities”], because they are not treated as citizens having group interests, hence not supposed to be political actors. These are, needless to say, cultural constructs.

Agitational politics and mobilizations give appearance of revolutionary potential. In residential universities [like JNU and AMU], relatively unfettered conditions (in hostels) lead them to search for personal identity and social meanings in ideologies and issues. From the 1960s onwards, migration of rural students in urban colleges, combined with the spectre of unemployment, drive them to agitation, as they become conscious and are able to get organized [even the MAO College had 54% of its students from rural areas].

Senior student leaders/ alumni provide the personnel and political resources [quite often for partisan and factional politics]. In most of the cases, easy access to political careers and the benefits of power have led students to participate in, rather than challenge the established political system.

In 1965-75, parts of India witnessed strong student movements, e.g. Nav Nirman Andolan of Gujarat and Sampurna Kranti (Total Revolution or Jai Prakash Movement) of Bihar. This was against rampant corruption in the government and in the universities.

Strong administrative measures have often succeeded in crushing student agitations, only to give rise to much accentuated crisis soon after. The threat of repression, and intimidations worked wonders for the moment, and pliant, slavish, subservient VCs and their sycophant aides and advisors took the charge. These elements, say Rudolph and Rudolph, fail to realize that student agitations can not be dealt with merely as a law and order problem, hence rather than repression, persuasion and conceding the legitimate demands should be the preferred ways of dealing with the student agitations. Because, most often, only real grievances and discontentment influence students to agitate and mobilize.

Press Release

ALIGARH October 2: The Officiating Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan today inaugurated a three-day exhibition of books and photographs on Mahatma Gandhi at the Maulana Azad Library. A large number of letters written by Mahatma Gandhi to the students and other AMU alumni freedom fighters are also put on display at the exhibition.

Delivering the presidential address at the Commemoration Meeting, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan said that the world has to realize that it is the need of hour to implement Gandhian values to achieve peace and prosperity. He further emphasized that we have to shun violence and violent means to achieve our goals and follow the path of ahimsa as shown to us by the Father of the Nation. He was the man whose teachings transcend times, borders, races and religions and it is the moral duty of every Indian to keep the spirit alive.

Prof. Hasan said that Mahatma Gandhi is the one of the greatest leaders that the world has ever seen. His unending belief in non-violence helped India achieve freedom from British rule by humbling British empire with the power of ahimsa. It was the impact of Mahatma Gandhi’s observance that United Nation had to unanimously declare October 2 as International Non-violence Day.

Prof. Hasan observed that Mahatma Gandhi was always in favour of communal harmony and he wanted the people to understand that religious unity can only be brought about if it is based on equal respect for all religions. Such a mindset will not only remove the discord among the various groups but also lead to the realization of the fact that religion is in fact a stabilizing force and not a disruptive one.

Professor Emeritus Irfan Habib devoted his speech to what he called Gandhi Ji’s finest last six months of his life highlighting the way he stood up alone against the current and ultimately gave up his life in the struggle against inter-communal slaughter. Prof. Habib felt it is the day that the country should express its sense of gratitude to the unique great man.

Prof. Qazi Afzal Husain, Dean, Faculty of Arts spoke on the thought process of Gandhi Ji and said that Gandhi Jayanti should be celebrated as International Peace and International Justice Day as well.

AMU Registrar, Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel highlighted the role of Gandhi Ji against untouchability that prevailed in Indian society on the basis of caste and religion and said that Aligarh Muslim University has been celebrating the Gandhi Jayanti with great fervor and zeal.

Mr. Mohammad Naiyer Rahman, a student of M. Com and Ms. Sumaiyah Naaz, student of BA Final also expressed their views on the occasion. At the end of the programme the officiating Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hasan administered an oath to the audience.
